Selina Todd was excellent!

stumbledin · 16/02/2021 23:31

Was just going to post a link as it was good to see Selina Todd on newsnight!

And better still just as they were trying to cut her off (not censorship but out of time) she managed to get in about Stonewall Divesity Champions being anything but about diversity, but about censorship and stopping ideas that are in fact legal!!!!

Unfortunately unless a lot of readers of mumsnet were watching this I expect they will have been mystified by the whole discussion.

Thelnebriati · 16/02/2021 23:32

They tweeted;
''“There’s a culture of fear among our universities, particularly among feminists.
Professor @selina_todd from the University of Oxford says universities are not upholding freedom to debate''

And theres a link to this;

Sorry I should have said, the clip is on their Twitter in the link.

Thingybob · 16/02/2021 23:36

How does she do it? She was up first thing this morning for Radio 4 and still sounds as fresh and clear 16 hours later.

Brilliant, thank you Selina.

BettyFilous · 16/02/2021 23:37

Selina was great. I also like her strategically placed items on her bookshelves. Grin

grafittiartist · 16/02/2021 23:38

That was excellent!!!

JoodyBlue · 16/02/2021 23:41

Agree. She is great.

GallopingGreen · 16/02/2021 23:43

I was flicking through channels and when I saw the book "The Political Erasure of Sex" strategically placed on the bookshelf I knew I would like to hear this interview and knew there'd be a thread here Smile
Professor Selina Todd was excellent. So clear and rational.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 16/02/2021 23:46

She was great and I loved the way she slipped in the bit about Stonewall at the end

Catmaiden · 16/02/2021 23:49

Yes, the carefully curated background was brilliant!

Nettleskeins · 16/02/2021 23:53

She was brilliant. I wondered whether BBC were trying to hurry past the Stonewall reference by ending it there, but perhaps as you say, it was a time problem. Such a good point too about the NUS being not truly representative of many voices, whilst purporting to be.

BitOfFun · 16/02/2021 23:59

It never has been, tbf. It's always been full of ambitious would-be politicos.

MaudTheInvincible · 17/02/2021 09:51

Just watched the whole piece on iplayer. Agree with Selina Todd that it may have been a wise idea for the government to engage with these institutions before announcing this scheme, but nevertheless I'm pleased to see some action being taken against the abhorrent culture of silencing and intimidation that bodies like the NUS enforce.

TheDuchessOfEarl · 17/02/2021 12:18

This may be outing but as I very rarely post, and am looking at a name change anyway...
I went to school with Selina (although we weren't friends, she was friends with people I class as friends) and I am immensely proud of her. If you're here Professor Todd, I just wanted you to know I think you're amazing and if I were to ever bump into you at "home" I'd tell you to your face

stumbledin · 17/02/2021 14:06

Oh I missed the books as i listened rather than watched. Has anyone got a screen shot?!

stumbledin · 17/02/2021 14:13

By the way the twitter clip is just a tiny fraction of the whole interview.

If you go to iPlayer the link to the episode of Newsnight is www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000sctd/newsnight-16022021 and segment starts at around 31 minutes in.

Its worth watching the whole thing because the SU representative never responds to any of the issued Selina Todd brings up and always stears it back to needing to create save spaces for minority groups etc.. Although I think at one point she denies any no platforming of feminists saying there have only ever been security issues. (Carefully not saying that trans activists have created the security problem.)

However I still think that most of the general public would not have any idea or possibly even care about what was said. Sad
