Well, where to next then? Really sad the students at this school can't see beyond the weird idea that JK Rowling is transphobic. Feel free to join the comments with your views! And what about Churchill? Political correctness....

Shhh, maybe no one will notice there's a number of factual errors in the Strike series too.

Doesn't matter. Accuracy isn't her strength. It's characterization and sense of place.

The endpoint of this is that heroes are people who came to prominence in the last few months and then they remain heroes until they're discredited in the coming few months/years.

J K Rowling has done nothing wrong INHO.
Churchill on the other hand, if we are being brutally honest, he is another matter entirely.
We could have won the war without him, given the qualities of our generals and the British people. At the end of the day, the war in Europe finished mainly because of the fact Hitler attacked Russia. From that point Germany was doomed.
Churchill used chemical weapons against Gaza in 1917, against the Bolsheviks in Russia in 1919 (An attempt to restore Russian royalty) at Emtsa, 120 miles South of Archangel.
Churchill also wanted to use these chemical weapons against "rebellious" tribes in India.
"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes," he declared in one secret memorandum. He criticised his colleagues for their "squeamishness", declaring that "the objections of the India Office to the use of gas against natives are unreasonable.
In fact, Curchill was enamoured with chemical weapons and used them against tribesmen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Churchill ordered the Black and Tans into Ireland in 1920, an act of sheer, muderous brutality, which ultimately led to new heights of bloodshed in Ireland.
In 1922, Churchill ordered the bombardment of Dublin, in order to remove Republicans from the Four Courts.
After WW2, in his second stint as PM, Churchill was key in ordering the 1953 Coup in Iran, which removed the democratically elected PM Mossadeq, and restore Shah Reza Pahlavi to the Peacock Throne.

Always a bit dodgy naming houses after people still alive.
Jimmy Saville House?

Delphinium20 · 12/02/2021 17:09

This just proves how little homework those shutting down Churchill and JKR have done. If you read a lot, do historical research and dig deeply into the biographies of many people, you'll find all kinds of imperfections and unearned advantages. You'll also find difficult circumstances, complex dilemmas and complicated back stories. I have a sinking feeling that almost all historical figures have this same issue of being human- it's almost like we can't really trust our heroes. Maybe that's why SuperHeroes are needed more than ever- they aren't problematic like human beings.

ChestnutStuffing · 12/02/2021 18:07

I'd really like to know when it was that people started to believe that naming things after people meant thinking they were 100% awesome in every way.

IvyTwines · 12/02/2021 18:50

@Abhannmor

JK Rowling is on a yellow card. If she writes ' Hermione beamed ' one more time it's turning red.I read it aloud to the kids. Everything after Prisoner of Azkaban needs an editor. But who's got the bottle to tell her !
To be fair, if you're racing to get the books out before your eagerly-waiting audience grows up, not to mention the child actors in the movies, you're not going to have much time to rewrite and hone!
TheBuffster · 12/02/2021 20:01

Ah no, the seven novels are sacred.
You'll find there's a little bit of JKs soul in each one.
That's why she's immortalWink

Although I'd just like to point out how many times Hedwig is reproachful.
Perhaps make a drinking game?

@TheBuffster

This is economy of character. All very deliberate.
TheBuffster · 12/02/2021 20:16

I know. I'm a huge fan. It was a tongue in cheek comment for the person Hermione beamed was grating on.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/02/2021 20:21

A few years ago the school my children attended decided to change the house names

They left it to the children to decide and vote

Apparently Earth, Wind, Fire and Air won

Which i reckon is an outright lie...i bet they went for HP houses or pop stars or celebs etc

Though none of the ‘house name is no longer suitable’ I suppose

BuntingEllacott · 12/02/2021 20:23

I'm a big fan too! Please don't misread the tongue in me cheek. (She does actually use economic means of distinguishing character, and it's very much a stylistic strength, imo)

TheBuffster · 12/02/2021 20:46

I particularly enjoy whatever words are used to make Hermione exclaim, "Ron!"
