If I were a student I'd ask them to pay for jeans, thick jumpers and sturdy boots to help me explore my male identity

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 03/02/2021 12:17

I wonder who's funding it.

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/02/2021 12:18

I can't be surprised that Edinburgh students think this is a good idea. Their university is indoctrinating them thoroughly. They have a whole section on their website devoted to gender identity woo including this page which tells them to beware of those horrible feminists (presumably like Julie Bindel who was assaulted on their campus.

No doubt the binder fund will be part of their next craven pleading to Stonewall to include them in its top 100 employers. This from a 'top' university.

By their criteria, it seems to be open to any student. You can “affirm” or “experiment” so any clothes, make up, hair accessories - anything at all - would qualify.

They use the term “gender presentation” like it’s a fab woke new thing, Clearly the 60s, 70s, 80s passed them by. Or maybe they haven’t met those decades as they’re still stuck in the 1950s.

Tragic.

prisencolinensinainciusol2 · 03/02/2021 12:41

Isn't it a stark contrast:

Make-up and binders.

prisencolinensinainciusol2 · 03/02/2021 12:42

That I could get behind.

They apologised for the language used on some of the websites for the products they recommend. Dunno which ones.
Under clothing and shoes there was only one entry: to the period pants people. “Thinx Boyshorts”, for a transman, apparently.

PurpleHoodie · 03/02/2021 15:22

UK Universities are fast becoming an international joke.

Why would wealthy Asian or American parents, for example, pay tens (or hundreds) of thousands of pounds to send their child/ren to to these institutions.

Why send your daughter thousands of miles away to be 'educated' at a place where mysogyny is rampant, and the senior administrators do not display any Critical Thinking skills.

PurpleHoodie · 03/02/2021 15:27

Heck, us UK parents who are minded to send our children to university are having to look more into the ethos of the places. Pastoral care is as important as the course contents.

Universities are businesses and they need to stop alienating their core customers.

We can take our ££££ $$$$ ¥¥¥¥ €€€€ elsewhere.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 03/02/2021 15:29

Of course it's Edinburgh uni! What an utter joke.

MedusasBrandyButter · 03/02/2021 19:34

Makeup- fine... but binders are bloody harmful and will restrict transmen's and female enbies' participation in sport.

And are "gaffs" tape to tuck penises and testicles? How is that not harmful, too?

Who the hell are these bastards encouraging these harmful products and practices?

MedusasBrandyButter · 03/02/2021 19:41

And, @PurpleHoodie, you are so right about funding. Scottish students are being subsidised (which could explain why they're not in a "customer" position to object), but covid is giving Scottish universities a taste of what it would be like to lose the fee-paying students. Utter catastrophe for the sector if students and their families give up on these universities long-term, rather than just this year.

This quote from the woo page We're constantly consuming all this media that's like, "You have been brainwashed into thinking that this is who you are", which is ridiculous. Because it's not easy, and I'd rather not do all of this if I didn't have to. It would make my life so much less complicated. People don't choose this for fun.

JoodyBlue · 03/02/2021 20:02

didn't mean to post that!!

JoodyBlue · 03/02/2021 20:04

but what I did mean to say is, how have these young uns got the idea that they "have to" transition. For people of my generation there was no transitioning, no blockers, no x sex hormones. So there really is no "have to" about it. Why do they not see how harmful it is to feel you "have to" change your body to fit society rather than change society. Rhetorical question, I know why. But it is so so sad.

radicalnotion · 03/02/2021 20:09

Scotland gets scarier every day.

OldCrone · 03/02/2021 20:45

This whole movement is very odd. Back in the 60s 70s and 80s, outrageous presentation was something that young people did, either as self expression or in order to shock (or a bit of both). Having this funded by their university would have been unthinkable.

And the whole idea that everything should be 'gendered' is just weird. As is the idea that this 'gender presentation' is so important that it seems appropriate to the student union to give students money to help fund it.

radicalnotion · 04/02/2021 00:09

It is massively regressive and yet so many people seem unable to see this.

PurpleHoodie · 04/02/2021 00:51

You're exactly right Medusa.

It would have been unthinkable, because being funded and encouraged and coddled by The Establishment was antithetical to the whole point of rebellion!

You know, I'm starting to wonder if all this pride in consumerist 'identities' is stripping young people of real pride in themselves.

FemaleAndLearning · 04/02/2021 00:56

Wearing a breast binder in a respiratory pandemic is madness, promoting breast binders during respiratory pandemic is irresponsible.

PurpleHoodie · 04/02/2021 01:01

Absolutely Oldcrone

It's why lovely, outspoken 'gender-benders' like Marilyn get labelled as "Terf" by (insert rudest word you can call someone in English) y idiots.

See also: lovely, famous outspoken lesbians and gay men who had to hide their homosexuality in the 70s/80s/90s and now understand that transgenerists* are a threat to their existence.

*not to be confused with transsexuals who understand fully that they are 'gender non-conforming' AND remain their own sex (genderists call them truSCUM)

PurpleHoodie · 04/02/2021 01:03

Yes!

Any company or establishment promoting this had better prepare themselves for lawsuits

So punk! (Not) Hmm
TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 04/02/2021 14:22

Why can't the genderconfused just buy their own makeup and underwear? They are all over 18. They don't even need to go into a shop as they can order online. I have no idea what a binder costs, but a decent quality lipstick is about a tenner, FFS.

I really hate being short, but that doesn't mean that I should have high heels, platforms or stilts provided for me. I can buy all of these items myself if I want them.
