Phil Spector was "talented but flawed"

According to the BBC news website, Phil Spector was "talented but flawed".

This is the Phil Spector who abused his wife for years, pulled guns on women who refused his advances, and murdered a woman he had met in a nightclub a few hours earlier.

The BBC have now amended the website but clearly one of their staff felt that murder and abuse of women is merely a character flaw.

I am fed up to the back teeth with crimes of misogyny being minimised. Anyone else?

A talented murderer ahhh.
Whatever next- a charismatic paedophile? A loveable rapist?

Babdoc · 17/01/2021 20:35

So Harold Shipman was just a talented but flawed doctor, according to the BBC, right?

Angryresister · 17/01/2021 20:38

Yes , they seemed to be much more interested in his genius...the women weren’t really worth mentioning.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/01/2021 20:38

Exactly.
Fred West - talented but flawed landscape Gardner?
Jimmy Savile - talented but flawed entertainer?

Jimmy Savile - talented but flawed entertainer?

TBF the BBC probably do think that.

wellthatsunusual · 17/01/2021 20:40

Ah yes, flawed, that's all murder is, a wee minor character flaws, a sidenote. Angry

CreamFacedLoon · 17/01/2021 20:41

I like to think I’m not easily shocked but my jaw literally dropped when I read that headline.

wellthatsunusual · 17/01/2021 20:45

I mean, he was talented and I think it's fair to note how he changed the sound of popular music, it's not really possible to just overlook that. But flawed? That's an understatement of the highest order.

I'm.not arguing with the fact he was a very talented music producer!

Its the relegating of murder to a "flaw". Especially as it then came out that he had done some truly appalling things to other women.

Phil Spectre

I know you weren't. I agree, flaw is ridiculous.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/01/2021 21:09

Was just coming to see if there was a thread. The coverage all seems to be about his talent, and fuck all about his victim.

or victims. He's been an abuser of women for many years.

This is the day to take a moment to remember Lana.

SunsetBeetch · 17/01/2021 22:16

I once listened to a Podcast about Lana's murder and they played his phone call to the police. He couldn't have given less of a shit about her, in fact he seemed to be blaming her; it was chilling.

He was scum

SorryAuntLydia · 18/01/2021 09:29

I see your ‘flawed’ and I raise you marred. Thanks Rolling Stone magazine Hmm

Some terrible woman inconveniently allowing herself to be murdered, spoilt the great man’s reputation. Angry

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by Rolling Stone seeing as the current cover is a pornified photo of a talented female artiste.

Triphazards · 18/01/2021 09:34

Spector Dead- Few Tears Shed.

Better headline?

Babdoc · 18/01/2021 15:13

Check out today’s Times. Much, much, better article and obituary.
More emphasis on the murder and his abusive behaviour, and they comment directly on criticism of the BBC’s “ talented but flawed” statement. His musical achievements are almost given as an incidental!

Oh god that's even worse!

Marred???? That bloody inconvenience murder conviction getting in the way of a great career.

I despair

Will Gomperz’s interview on Today is worth a listen. He was at pains to say he was a horrible person despite being a great producer. WG gave examples of his awful behaviour, at which point I couldn’t understand why he was being celebrated. He sounded absolutely vile and dangerous. It did smack of the BBC frantically back-peddling in response to yesterday’s criticism.

LittleRa · 18/01/2021 16:59

@thebestnamehere

Phil Spectre
No, the OP is correct, it’s Spector
wellthatsunusual · 18/01/2021 18:14

this headline is a bit better I thought

Much better- as the BBC one has been changed to “Pop producer jailed for murder dies at 81”. ‘Person jailed for murder” is differed to “murderer”. So the one you’ve linked to is much clearer, plus names his victim.

BBC has apologised.

Bluethrough · 18/01/2021 19:13

From the Telegraph editorial..... FFS!

Phil Spector, the hugely successful music producer and infamous murderer, died on Saturday. Even before his crime, Mr Spector was media-shy and went a quarter of a century without giving an interview. That was until 2003, when, just three weeks before his arrest, he spoke to Mick Brown. It’s both a sweeping look at his immense influence on the world of music and a remarkable insight into a troubled mind
