Online clothes sellers harassed

That's me shelving plans to ebay old clothes, then.

'Women selling clothes online are being sent explicit messages, with requests for sex and "worn" garments.'

'"We get so many creepy messages and comments it's too time-consuming to report them all," she said. "A few times I have felt concerned for safety.'

Can we just ban men from the internet, now, please?

I got one, I was selling a pair of high heels and some creep messaged asking for pictures of me wearing them. Dh replied asking why the guy wanted pictures of a 40 year old man in high heels. The guy never messaged back disappointingly.

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2021 11:50

Well played, kat. We shouldn't to deal with it at all.

I really like the idea of a female-only internet. Imagine how much more safer and relaxing it would be.

Kndg · 17/01/2021 11:55

My DD at uni was selling some old gym wear on ebay, she got creepy messages asking for photos, and had she worn underwear whilst wearing the gym gear. Some weird men out there.

It's an absolutely glorious idea. I think increasingly women are finding/making their own spaces online. The difference between some groups that I've seen on social media that have splintered off from main groups to form 'women only' groups is enormous. It's all so much calmer and more civilised. Less ball-swinging, less fighting. Disagreement, yes, but generally more constructive and even arguments don't seem to descend into threats/shouting. It's genuinely wonderful, and I feel relaxed in a way that I really don't online generally.

Tbh for as long as there are women who do sell used stuff with pictures for often large sums of money you're going to get weirdos hoping you're one of those people 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheChampagneGalop · 17/01/2021 12:19

Arabella What kind of groups are those?
I'm glad MN and Ovarit exists, even though these sites aren't completely women only.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 17/01/2021 12:24

I’ve had this whilst selling shoes and a dress. Men asking for photos of me wearing them.

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2021 12:34

I'm thinking of facebook groups, mostly, Champagne.

Its not just clothes either, I blocked one buyer who asked for photos of me wearing a necklace I was selling Envy

LizzieMacQueen · 17/01/2021 12:57

@Thelnebriati I'm not sure that request on the necklace was creepy was it? I find it hard, even if I know the length of a chain, how it sits around a neck. Ditto handbags. I like to see how they hang.

NavyFlask · 17/01/2021 13:02

I think this increase in harassment is driven by the increase in number of sellers that are advertising their wares in a provocative manner, primarily young 'student' type women who are clearly doing it to drive their prices up. I think there's also an increasing number of people who think that this kind of "service" isn't really sex work. Sad

You didn't read the email.
And its not just that item, I got so many emails from men making weird demands I changed my username to a unisex one, and since then its stopped.

SebastianTheCrab · 17/01/2021 13:45

I was selling my toddler's used PJs recently (hardly worn, he grows like a weed) and unusually it was a bloke who bought it. I searched his previous transactions and the stuff he was buying was so weird - a super cheap women's vest top from China, some horrendous plastic jewellery, something from a place that sold weird fetishist trousers - I cancelled the transaction.

GingerBeverage · 17/01/2021 13:46

Less Hebay, more Shebay

GingerBeverage · 17/01/2021 13:48

I recall reading an article by a young plus size woman admitting that she, a feminist, had been lured into sex work by selling old clothes on Shpock (or similar app) and a man offering her money for photos. It escalated from there, and the article was a warning to others.

ILoveMyBernina · 17/01/2021 13:54

There's always been this kind of harassment. I remember my DM telling me that when she was selling a pram in a newspaper ad (1960s) she got some bloke ringing up asking some dodgy questions ( a woman selling a pram ffs)
My sister was selling a welsh dresser in a newspaper ad (1980s) and some bloke started innocently enough then started to ask if the dresser had mirrors.........
They've obviously moved onto ebay now.

StylishMummy · 17/01/2021 14:28

I sell used shoes on eBay (designer branded) as I don't like to wear them more than a few times. I have to admit - I now target my ads to ensure the fetishists find them, as they pay top dollar.

Why wouldn't I? Sell my old choos for £100 to a 'normal' person, or £250 from a foot fetishist. I don't reply to messages asking if I've had sex wearing them though Envy (

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2021 14:38

A pram? Welsh dresser?! Jesus wept.

Stylish, maybe it seems irrational, but I wouldn't want anyone using my stuff like that.

At least 10 years ago now, but I was browsing shoes on eBay and came across listings for well-worn shoes, really tatty worn-to-destruction shoes being modelled on bare feet. I think I wondered, aghast, what woman would buy these worthless shoes for ooh, a whole two seconds before the penny dropped.

Depop is awful for it at times. People asking for used undies and other disgusting things.
