They followed this up with saying we must be supportive to all runners.

Running magazine then. Needs a rebrand.

Saw this on facebook.
All the comments were negative.
Why are so many people so stupid?

BrassicaRabbit · 14/01/2021 14:03

Of course it is correct to support all runners.

However, considering that female runners have very specific issues (harassment, assault, necessity of wearing a sports bra, training & chance of injury affected by relaxin hormone if you've ever been pregnant, ditto hormone fluctuations of menstrual cycle etc etc) I'm surprised that a woman's running magazine wouldn't actually want to focus on, you know, women running. I'm very much their target audience but this is pretty alienating.

ChateauMargaux · 14/01/2021 14:16

I've written to the editor... pretty much what @BrassicaRabbit said.

So now Eddie Izzard will be breaking records as a woman!! Of fucking course...

Paperthinwalls · 14/01/2021 17:17

I support anyone’s right to run and enjoy it but we cannot escape from the fact that Eddie is biologically male. Be a runner, raise money for charity. Crack on. But you can’t just claim you are a woman and then run in women’s races.
I did find this comment funny.

This makes me so upset. When women's sport is under threat how can they do this?! And why will they not listen to all of the women saying this is not ok and continue to back their stance despite such a lack of support...even on Twitter!

Falleninwiththewrongcrowd · 14/01/2021 22:16

Women's Running followed up their tweet supporting Eddie with this one proclaiming that they 'support all people who identify as women to run.'
This seems to suggest that they might not support women who identify as transmen or non-binary, or all the other women who just don't identify as anything in particular. So maybe not such an 'inclusive community' after all.
As with the previous tweet, loads of responses, which are overwhelmingly critical, often mocking, sometimes exasperated, but really not abusive or hateful at all.

Its not going down well.

Hope it was worth it

ChateauMargaux · 15/01/2021 06:57

The comments on their facebook page are awful.. I was expecting them to be more pro woman than Twitter.... how wrong was I?

Somehow whenever anybody has to qualify their support, they usually miss transmen from the list, let alone women who don't identity as women.

During a shitty week this has nearly pushed me over the edge.

I love running. Have ran for 15 years. My husband loves running abs has ran for 10 years.

Small survey.

How many times do you think myself and my husband have had men shout at them, whistle at them, beeped their horn at them, run alongside them, had to run really quickly along a dark alley because they are petrified, had to run while on their period, had boob pain from running, etc?

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 15/01/2021 15:40

If you are feeling depressed by the sabotage of womensrunning.uk there are some inspired responses in the thread that might cheer you up again.

Have they hidden that second tweet?

NiceGerbil · 15/01/2021 17:43

No I found it

Oh shit, I'm sorry

Is there any chances the replies to the Tweet will help?

Either they deleted comments off facebook or a claxon went off somewhere.
When I looked there were 35 comments and all of them were negative.

persistentwoman · 15/01/2021 19:29

That twitter thread Squirrel posted is brilliant - really made me laugh Grin

OhDear2200 · 15/01/2021 20:02

@Stealhsquirrelnutkin

Love it! Cheered me up.

Twitter replies were definitely not in favour.

DialSquare · 15/01/2021 20:19

Brilliant! I'm considering changing my name to ScrotalChafing.

Relaxin hormone is a factor each month too brassica, all women will have some to kick start our cervix to open enough to let blood out, whether we’ve been pregnant or not. Monthly cycle also affects joints loosening for women - oestrogen stabilises soft tissue like ligaments etc and progesterone destabilises them, which poses risks to women as running with looser than average joints is risky and requires specific advice. Women carry less muscle than men, even fit strong women, and muscle stabilises joints and decreases the risks, so again increases the need for advice specific to women’s bodies. Carrying less muscle than men means there’s many disabilities that are more difficult to manage in women (think connective tissue disorders and so on) , so articles addressing disabilities running would require different advice for women than men. Women have different posture due to breasts and female pelvis, we likely need specific physio advice that doesn’t apply to males. Articles on buying kit are very different for women when taking into account the extensive variety of breast sizes. And what about running while breastfeeding, not anything men need to consider. There’s a huge huge list of female specific issues relating to running that would require very different support from men.

I don’t run anymore, joints are fucked for good, but when I think of running I think of the woman who was raped and left for dead in Central Park (the Central Park five case always gets talked about in terms of racism, but never addresses the misogyny). I wish I could recall her name, I can see her face from the book cover shot. I always think of her two weeks after being attacked being back in Central Park running (with the support of a running group for people with disabilities). It always brings back how hugely different everything is for women, even running, which feels like it shouldn’t be as it’s the simple thing we all did as kids, yet still the fact we are women with women’s bodies can’t ever be escaped.

ChateauMargaux · 16/01/2021 10:40

@Blubellsarebells I have returned to the Facebook page and indeed, it is a TOTALLY different vibe. I wish I could compare the two, seems like there has been quite a bit of editing. Rewriting history in the fast moving age of social media is truly terrifying!

rosy71 · 16/01/2021 10:43

I'm not sure why Eddie is wearing pink lipstick for running. I don't think I've ever seen anyone running in lipstick.

When was the last time anyone anywhere wore pink lipstick for that matter?
