Relaxin hormone is a factor each month too brassica, all women will have some to kick start our cervix to open enough to let blood out, whether we’ve been pregnant or not. Monthly cycle also affects joints loosening for women - oestrogen stabilises soft tissue like ligaments etc and progesterone destabilises them, which poses risks to women as running with looser than average joints is risky and requires specific advice. Women carry less muscle than men, even fit strong women, and muscle stabilises joints and decreases the risks, so again increases the need for advice specific to women’s bodies. Carrying less muscle than men means there’s many disabilities that are more difficult to manage in women (think connective tissue disorders and so on) , so articles addressing disabilities running would require different advice for women than men. Women have different posture due to breasts and female pelvis, we likely need specific physio advice that doesn’t apply to males. Articles on buying kit are very different for women when taking into account the extensive variety of breast sizes. And what about running while breastfeeding, not anything men need to consider. There’s a huge huge list of female specific issues relating to running that would require very different support from men.
I don’t run anymore, joints are fucked for good, but when I think of running I think of the woman who was raped and left for dead in Central Park (the Central Park five case always gets talked about in terms of racism, but never addresses the misogyny). I wish I could recall her name, I can see her face from the book cover shot. I always think of her two weeks after being attacked being back in Central Park running (with the support of a running group for people with disabilities). It always brings back how hugely different everything is for women, even running, which feels like it shouldn’t be as it’s the simple thing we all did as kids, yet still the fact we are women with women’s bodies can’t ever be escaped.
