Nordic Model in the UK - please support this Bill

Nordic Model Now! need our help to get the Sexual Exploitation Bill in to law in the UK...

"Buying human beings for sex is unacceptable.
Prostitution is inherently violent and seriously damages those in it. Evidence shows that the majority of women & children enter prostitution as a result of childhood abuse, poverty and misfortune, grooming, coercion, or sex trafficking.

The forthcoming Sexual Exploitation Bill would establish a Nordic Model in the UK. It would decriminalise all those who are prostituted, providesupport services to help them exit, and makes buying people for sex a criminal offence, in order to reduce the demand that drives sex trafficking."

Please contact your MP to ask them to support women and VOTE FOR the upcoming Bill.

Bumped

OhHolyJesus · 04/01/2021 18:01

Thanks for bumping - will email my MP.

TheTigersBride · 04/01/2021 18:02

NB this Bill applies to England and Wales only.

NI already has implemented it. The SNP talked about doing so at a conference around 4 years ago but haven't taken it forward.

Although this applies only to England and Wales, MPs from all four nations can vote on it in Parliament. So wherever you live in the UK, do please take a few minutes to write to your MP.

Nordic Model Now! has developed a really easy tool for doing this with a template letter. It really only takes a couple of minutes:

If you are not in England and Wales please note SNP MPs historically do not vote on matters which only affect England and Wales, unless issues which may appear to be “England-only” have knock-on consequences for Scotland in terms of public finances.

Thanks for bumping...
There's a lot of money to be made from prostitution (albeit not by the women and children involved) and the bill will no doubt get lots of pushback from the porn & pimp lobby and from those who feel entitled to buy sex from otherwise unwilling participants.
Please share and support.

Done and shared.

TheTigersBride That may be true, but part of the exercise is to try and show MPs in Scotland and other parts of the UK, that there is mass support for the Nordic Model approach.

The Scottish Government has recently held a consultation on this and so prostitution policy and legislation is likely to come up there. Showing Scottish MPs that there is support now, is still important in my opinion.

Message sent to MP. Thanks for the link

The "Nordic Model" is not supported by the following organisations (they all support complete decriminalisation). The first four on the list are British orgs made up of women who sell sexual services.

Scot-Pep
International Union of Sex Workers
Umbrella Lane
English Collective of Prostitutes
Amnesty International
World Health Org
Human Rights Watch
UNAIDS and UNFPA
Freedom United (International anti-slavery org)
ILGA (international LGBTI assoc)
PICUM (org based with rights and safety of migrants in Europe)
GAATW (Global Alliance against Trafficked women)
HIV Scotland
National AIDS Trust

Here's a useful article by Julie Bindel Margarita - makes the case for the Nordic Model and challenges the idea that the problems of sexual violence, rape and trafficking, and the ensuing trauma, would be solved by legalisation. Also mentions 'sex-worker' unions and Amnesty links. Those in favour of legalisation don't necessarily have the health and well-being of prostituted women and girls at the forefront of their thinking.

Why do you put "sex worker" in quotes? It refers to women who sell sex, or "prostitutes" if you would rather use that word.

And what's wrong with Amnesty Int.? And the World Health Org? And the others? Wouldn't the prostitutes themselves, human rights and health orgs know best about how different legalisation models would have an impact on those who sell sex?

MargaritaPie · 06/01/2021 23:11

btw decriminalisation and legalisation are different.
