I have just come from reading this and cannot find a thread on it.

As usual, Janice Turner's writing is amazing, jam packed with properly researched fact and compelling.

Not a word is wasted.

"None of this would matter if transition made these girls happy. But while initially testosterone makes them fearless and swaggering, the Tavistock GIDS (gender identity development services) clinic’s own report shows no long-term improvement in psychological wellbeing. This rare piece of research was published reluctantly only a few weeks ago, perhaps because it threatens an entire ethos. In clinics from Finland to Australia red flags are rising. “Detransitioners” are speaking out. Medical negligence class actions will begin."

Janice Turner was my first ray of sunlight into the realities of the trans debate for women. Forever grateful Janice

Bloody brilliant article.

To note - ID currently about eight quid on Kindle. I've bought it.

Delighted to see it's one of the Economist's books of the year.

persistentwoman · 31/12/2020 12:14

The comments under the article are quite outstanding!

Aargh that should read thanks tea!

AllDoneIn · 31/12/2020 13:59

Fabulous piece of writing.

BettyFilous · 31/12/2020 14:40

I’ve taken out a Times subscription and it was this article that tipped me from guest to subscriber. Janice is an excellent writer and the Times have been key to bringing these issues to light when other media outlets have shied away from the topic or presented unthinking, heavily biased propaganda as fact. Their detransitioners article earlier this year was also excellent, though sad reading.

Quotation from the postmillenial article - "Dr. McEvenue tells us that there could be as many as two million people with gender dysphoria in Canada – about 1.5% of the population".

I do not know which of these two figures is accurate but they cannot both be true. Two million people is actually about 5.3%, not 1.5%, of the population of Canada (which is currently estimated at 38 million by the government of Canada).

nauticant · 01/01/2021 11:49

Great article. Interesting comments. Where the comments do miss the mark is that even people who have read about these issues often fail to understand that it is not all one thing and that there are different cohorts with different inputs. So you'll see comments attacking Turner and Shrier asking questions about parenting because the commentator is focusing on a particular cohort for which the parenting isn't the dominant factor or might even be irrelevant. People love simple answers to complex questions.

For some reason I keep misreading that doctor's name as Dr Revenue.

Thanks for the share token, great article and, as Janice says, with a few honourable exceptions, the lack of curiosity from journalists - the whole point of their job is to be nosey - is shameful.

PopperUppleton · 01/01/2021 13:03

I don't seem to be able to buy this from Amazon (my only option at the moment due to my location and COVID) - it says there's a problem with my bank authorising payment. I'm a Prime member and have just ordered something else which has gone through. I'm a bit suspicious. However, it has downloaded onto my Kindle so I guess I'll read it quick before they remove it!

PointersPlease · 01/01/2021 13:26

When i looked for it on Amazon last week it said release 31dec . Now its saying June 2021. What's going on here?

CrossPurposes · 01/01/2021 14:07

Kobo (owned by Rakuten) does not have the book listed in any format* but they did: www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/irreversible-damage-2

You can find it on other sites but I was interested to note that BIC ("the book industry's independent supply chain organisation") has it categorised in Conservatism and Right-of-centre Democratic Ideologies.

*except in Japan where they appear to have not got the message.

nauticant · 01/01/2021 14:15

You can get it at Blackwell's, assuming they deliver to your address:

Another winner by Janice.

The jiggery pokery going on with the book availability is pretty sinister. Do genderists never have a wee moment of doubt when they’re calling for books to be burned or getting them taken off the shelves and think “hang on, is this what progressive movements usually do?”.

Nah. Get those dangerous ideas burnt.

EdgeOfACoin · 02/01/2021 07:09

I hope she follows up with an article about how they're trying to quash the distribution of this book.

I got a copy off eBay a month or so ago (new but shipped from abroad.)

Definitely worth reading.

It shows as available on Amazon for me with an expected quickest delivery of 11th Jan.

YawnyOwl · 02/01/2021 09:49

@Arborea

This book seems to be hitting libraries now: I was interested to see that my local library service has a generous number of copies. The neighbouring areas have few, if any.

The same applies to Rachel Rooney's book My Body Is Me.

That's fantastic! My county doesn't have any yet...
teawamutu · 02/01/2021 10:32

Do libraries still have to buy the book if you request it and they don't stock it?

Joisanofthedales · 02/01/2021 11:07

Read the article, read the comments, bought the book through but not from Amazon.

CrossPurposes · 02/01/2021 12:37

I think this is (or certainly feels like) cancellation by the faceless and the unaccountable.

spongedog · 02/01/2021 12:52

I've ordered my copy, from Amazon - delivery mid-January. Do you think the later date is for the paperback version, rather than the hardback?

MoodyMarshall · 02/01/2021 13:39

I read it on my iPhone 'books' app. It is an absolutely essential read for any parent, teacher, HCP etc. I actually think teenagers should read it, too. Radicalisation is happening under our noses.

334bu · 02/01/2021 13:54

Showing on Blackwell's now.
