Looking for recommendations of charities (to whom(?) I can donate) that focus on the safety, welfare and development of women and girls.

Thanks

Nia is a London based DV charity.
Centre for Women's Justice.
Southall Black Sisters.
Plan International.

It comes up regularly and there are more suggestions on these threads but its best to check before you donate;

Many of these groups get quite a lot of funding.

I would check if your local refuge needs donations. Even if because of pressure from local funders they provide services to men, the majority of users are women, and more often than not their children leave home with them.

Probably too late for Xmas appeals, but usually need money for toys and small luxuries.

There's a list of women's groups here asking for donations:

Though why Solace is asking for money when they have just got over £1.5 million from the (last?) Tampon Tax payout

I donate to action aid as that seems to focus on women and girls.

Some more ideas on this thread OP:

Charities worth donating to (that don't have a problem with women)? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4085182-Charities-worth-donating-to-that-dont-have-a-problem-with-women

filia relies completely on donations and volunteers.

You can also buy solidarity tickets for their conference so women who can't afford tickets can go.

Thank you so much. I looked at Plan International and although they do seem to do some fantastic work I can't get on board with their definition of girl.

I did do a mumsnet search but I was clearly not using the best search words.

YWCA?

DadSupportingOrchid · 22/12/2020 23:54

For many years I have been supporting a small charity called Orchid Project that aims to end the practice of Female Genital Cutting (FGC, often called FGM).

Many of these groups get quite a lot of funding.

I don't know about Plan International (who do great work) but the Centre for Women's Justice and Southall Black Sisters (who also do great work) operate on a shoestring. I suspect Nia does too.

stumbledin · 23/12/2020 15:35

Both Southall Black Sisters and Nia are part of the domestic violence sector which is relatively well funded. eg Solace WA getting £1 million just for a project.

For those of you who aren't aware Nia Project is Hackney Women's Aid. At some time in the past the then management thought the name Nia Project would make them more welcoming. though for women in Hackney looking for their local women's aid, not that useful!

Centre for Women's Justice is self funding? or ...

stumbledin · 23/12/2020 15:40

Not forgetting that some women's aid groups in London appropriated the funding for Rape Crisis projects, against the normal practice of Rape Crisis Centres being local volunteer run groups. (This was thanks for funding from Boris when Mayor, after terrible cuts to Rape Crisis funding by Labour)

Just take a look at this list of recent job opportunities at nia - hardly a small struggling group (although I totally support DV projects being properly funded) www.womensgrid.org.uk/?s=nia+project
