Info please - debunking Mermaids suicide stats

There was a post here which I can't find which was about debunking Mermaid's suicide stats; I think 2 surveys which were self-selecting - and only had about 40 participants.

Other countries are spouting the same nonsense, but does anyone have any ACTUAL stats that prove the 'kids are dying' theory?

Interested in Canada, Oz, NZ

The judges’ ruling in the Kiera Bell case, I think, debunks it too

Thanks both.
Another head in hands moment.

The Mermaids/Stonewall misused data is discussed on this Fair Play for Women page. I do wish that when people state the '48% of Trans people attempt suicide' line they were challenged as to where that figure had come from. But then the questioner would come across as heartless and so no one does.

If you're going to ask people "How does being let down and victimised make you feel?" and then give a list of boxs to tick, one of which was 'have suicidal thoughts" you're likely to get quite a few ticks.

I'm very, very wary of 'Are you a good boyfriend/girlfriend questionaires. Must fill in the 'Are you under-valued at work?'' one...

There was a recent IPSO report highlighting the problem, although they didn't dig into it, just gave references.

www.ipso.co.uk/media/1986/mediatique-report-on-coverage-of-transgender-issues.pdf

There are two main areas of potential concern regarding accuracy in the use of statistics:

▪ Suicidality of young trans people. The statistic that “48% of young transgender people have attempted suicide” is used frequently by columnists, lobbyists and politicians to reinforce the urgency of ensuring therapeutic support to children who are presenting as transgender. However, this is based on a survey by mental health charity PACE of only 27 young transgender people, which undermines its unqualified applicability (a sample that size would imply a wide margin of error). While the Mermaids charity has said its experience points to high levels of suicidality, the NHS’s Tavistock GIDS has suggested that suicidality amongst those who are referred to the service is “extremely rare.” The use of the specific 48% statistic from the PACE survey highlights potential editorial standards issues relating accuracy.

Useful alternative questions (that might actually help in reducing the rate):
'Are those stats for the UK? Is that for all four nations?'
'Are those stats going up at the moment, or down?'
'In absolute terms, how many suicides and suicide attempts were recorded for trans-identifying young people in this country/county/continent last year?'
