17 year old kills mother details

There is an awfully grim story about a 17 year old boy who strangled and murdered his mother in the Times.

It is all awful, however the details on his gender issues and mental health are worth noting. He was born Ben, had mental health issues including being suicidal and depression, declared himself genderless plus there is a suggestion of autism.

The father says he was in a mental health unit which segregated boys and girls which made his gender identity issues worse. He doesn't say if he expected his son to be in a mixed unit or in with girls - either would have put the girls' needs second to his needs.

He was due to stand trial in October but killed himself four days before.

So grim, the poor woman.

For once this might go down on the crime stats on the female side rather rather them the men inappropriately. And yes it’s a pretty crass comment by me reading the details but the one lack of honesty is infuriating and expect the factors I refer to to become relevant to the case

Oops got it all mixed up. Male murderer not a women one I meant

Gingerkittykat · 15/12/2020 05:25

Rowan was male, so the murder should be recorded as a male crime.

I hate the suggestion from the Guardian that being forced into a correct sex unit made him worse. Women have had to fight for single sex units and we don't need that undone, presumably we would need special non binary units too for the special non men or women.

It says he has mild autism, whatever that is (I'm autistic) but if he had been in a mental health unit before his crimes and in a secure unit awaiting trial then there was a lot more going on in terms of mental illness.

It's often presented as mental health issues because of the struggle to come to terms with gender identity but it could well often be the other way round, gender identity confusion as an expression of/coping mechanism for mental health distress. Especially as there seems to be much more validation, support and specialist services for gender identity than for, say, asd or PTSD.

@Emeeno1

'I always wonder whether the woman in a situation like that was on MN. She said to a friend she was walking on eggshells all the time - it sounds as though she'd be asking for advice on a forum when her child has so many problems.'

Interesting considering there is a mum on here tonight asking if she should send her daughter back to university (safe, secure) because her daughter has been telling her to fuck off, calling her a cunt, and buying alcohol for her 13 year old brother and letting him drink it in her bedroom and a lot of posters are telling the mum she is being unreasonable. And that it is basically her fault.

How the fuck did we get here? If that poor mother came here looking for help she would probably have gone away feeling worse.

That's an inaccurate summary of the thread in question. Many posters- myself included- are worried that the teenage's daughter's sudden personality change after her first term at uni (so in no way the mother's fault) indicates some serious trauma, such as sexual assault, or mental illness. We are concerned for the welfare of a vulnerable young woman: it's not truthful to characterise that as blaming the mother - no one has said.

Clarenceboddicker, the Guardian says "teenager" not "son", and doesn't mention his sex. Are you looking at the same link?

@elgreco

I was talking about this to my husband. I asked him why do disturbed sons nearly always kill their mothers rather than fathers? He replied that the fathers had probably fucked off already. Its just not fair.
The fathers will often be similar physical size and strength so less vulnerable

In this case the parents had split. Rowan had left school (near mum) and gone to dad’s. He was visiting mum for the weekend.

Sorry, Rowan was visiting mum, not dad visiting mum.
