Or I think she is. Just caught the end of the intro to the programme.

They are on Brexit at the moment so at the end?

[quote ScreamingBeans]It's funny how intellectually lazy people assume young people are automatically more enlightened than older people.

I always get a vision of the last scene of Cabaret with all the young people singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me.

Yep, I often think of that song. Sad

ScreamingBeans · 11/12/2020 00:23

That wonderful bit with the old fella with the flat cap... says it all.

I often feel like him. Grin

PhoebeSnow · 11/12/2020 00:39

Aye that old guy with the hat has seen it all before...

Hate to say it but I get the impression the ratio of him and his point of view to everybody elses in the beer garden is reflected in today's ratio of GC to "everyone else"
Biscuitsanddoombar · 11/12/2020 07:39

It was enraging! Patronising & also proving that ageism is a completely acceptable prejudice to the bbc

Cis - fuck off!!!!!!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/12/2020 07:56

Feck off with your 'cis' Kirsty. Newsnight are so scared of putting a foot wrong - the interview I watched with Suzanne on You Tube (cant remember who it was with now) was brilliant. That was just shite.

Yes I watched that last night. It's called "Lockdown TV" by Unherd. The interview gave her space to speak and be herself and it was really compelling.

I know it can feel like this but I really don't think it's the case. The BBC and other institutions may be in thrall but I think most people still have no idea what's going on. Which is why that Private Eye clip about Owen Jones believing people like him have captured the public mood is so funny.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/12/2020 08:18

The mentioned interview with Suzanne

Is there a link to this clip? I'd like to see that.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/12/2020 09:36

@DougRossIsTheBoss

That was Mary Robinson, former Irish PM that she was being patronising to as well.
As an aside, Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland not 'Irish PM' 😊
Floisme · 11/12/2020 09:43

Sorry alias I worded my post badly. There's no video clip but I was referring to one of the Private Eye pieces that Stumbled links on the previous page. It doesn't quote OJ directly although, if I close my eyes, I can just hear him saying that!.

CatsCantCatchCriminals2 · 11/12/2020 10:19

That "tomorrow belongs to me" scene in Cabaret is one the most chilling things in cinema.

Identity politics stuff gives me the heeby jeebies too.

I think Suzanne was wary and guarded....no surprises there. Even so, I think she got her points over, and shared how she knew the impact she was having because of the regular threats she receives to herself and her children...something Kirsty Wark did not pursue, I note.

OTOH, there's no reason for Kirsty Wark to go soft on an interviewee. Suzanne held her own just fine, despite her lack of apparent desire to appear combative. Why should we (or she) be in combat, anyway? Suzanne's views are not outlandish at all and she is entitled to point out - as she did - the clash between trans rights and women's rights. She rolled her eyes slightly at 'cis' , perfectly justifiably.

Thimbleberries · 11/12/2020 12:36

I wonder if the Newsnight presenters are decided before or after the guests/topics? (A bit like Woman's Hour presenters seemed to be given - or not given - particular topics). Must be a bit harder as the Newsnight ones are more current and there is less control about what gets discussed on various days, and I guess the presenters must have relatively fixed schedules.

RozWatching · 11/12/2020 12:50

Ah, out of touch with the ''enlightened generation''. Please 🙄. They really have swallowed the ''all ''terfs'' are far-right dinosaurs so out of touch with the yoof'' bollocks, haven't they? Bless. I've got some very disappointing news for them...

It's embarrassing that journalists peddle this line. Not that you have to be a historian to know that young people can get carried away with bad ideology, but I'd expect better from a BBC journalist who has a degree in history.

Agreed. I've just watched it and thought Suzanne came across as completely lucid and credible. Kirsty Wark seemed perfectly professional - although the "enlightened" question was a bit "When did you stop beating your wife?"
stumbledin · 11/12/2020 14:49

I hadn't realised that BBC had trailed this in advance on twitter - so not only did it get everyone going on about how SM couldn't complain about being cancelled. And maybe KW took the tone from that. SM just enough horrible transphobe, and so on.

But as is now the pattern nothing on facebook where they usually get a lot of push back.

Still cant get over KW apparently not knowing about the right to single sex spaces.

OP posts:
Angryresister · 11/12/2020 20:23

The fact that KW chose not to pursue the point about death threats to Suzanne’s family is telling. What the hell was the point of it?

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 14/12/2020 10:26

That was very telling, wasn’t it. Angryresister?

Abhannmor · 14/12/2020 19:20

Kirsty and her magic dancing eyebrow. Getting a bit stale now.

Missed the Newsnight interview but I read this by chance tonight after catching up on this thread:

www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2020/11/first-thoughts-how-suzanne-moore-split-guardian

'Too many of us have been silent for too long,' writes Peter Wilby, a former editor of the New Statesman and The Independent. He makes the point that I first saw highlighted here: The Guardian's increasing reliance on a US audience. Some of the detail was also already reported in Suzanne's Unherd article but I completely agree with him that in the past we would not have expected to see censorship from the liberal left.

As a white man in his 70s I think he has not been exposed to some of the transphobia accusations but I think it is helpful to see something written for an audience unfamiliar with the death threats etc made towards so many women - especially as a lot of New Statesman readers are probably Guardian readers too.

Italiangreyhound · 15/12/2020 02:08

"I always get a vision of the last scene of Cabaret with all the young people singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me." Bloody hell yes, it is very clear. The poor old bloke sits there as the Hitler youth sing!

CatsCantCatchCriminals2 · 15/12/2020 10:39

Thank you for posting that Peter Wilby piece nettie.

I used to love the Guardian but now feel betrayed.

tiktok · 16/12/2020 17:47

Good insight, nettie....the US is an important market for the Gdn.
