www.economist.com/international/2020/12/12/an-english-ruling-on-trans-identifying-teens-could-have-global-repercussions

If anyone can share the whole article? Looks like an important one.

Thank you!

DisappearingGirl · 10/12/2020 23:23

That's a great article

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 10/12/2020 23:28

Wow. That's an excellent article. It touches so many bases and in depth. It scrutinises the affirmative model which is the basis for so much that has gone wrong with the approach to gender non-conforming kids. It's also an important article because The Economist has a small, but influential global readership, it ends up in front of legislators.

The States and the amount of money tied up in this is a huge issue. They're so far down the rabbit hole, as the clinician quoted points out:

Joshua Safer of the Mount Sinai Centre for Transgender Medicine and Surgery in New York says puberty blockers are now “the conservative option” (because of the assertion that they're a pause - but we know from the Tavistock case that they almost inevitably lead to further intervention).

Thanks for sharing Avocado. Articles like this that will change minds is part of Keira's mighty achievement.

“I think there is going to be an avalanche of lawsuits,” sooner than we think... I think.

In 2018 the American Association of Pediatrics (aap) said that all medical evidence supports the “affirmative” approach. But according to a detailed rebuttal by James Cantor, a Canadian sexual-behaviour scientist, none of the 11 academic studies of the subject reaches that conclusion.

How does this happen??

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 11/12/2020 00:48

Mind boggling

7Days · 11/12/2020 01:11

Thank you for posting this.

I am glad to see both sides of the issue being presented in an article.

EdgeOfACoin · 11/12/2020 05:39

The Economist has been consistently good on this issue. It has also discussed the impact of male-bodied people in women's sport. They seem to have some sensible writers on board.

imhereforthesanity · 11/12/2020 07:23

@Scautish Thank you for posting the full article, very well thought through and balanced.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 11/12/2020 07:31

Thanks Scautish

highame · 11/12/2020 07:48

Thank's for that OP. All very messy isn't it. However, the 'watch and wait' seems to be gaining ground

YouNoob · 11/12/2020 07:55

Thanks for highlighting the article, OP and for posting the full article, Scautish.

Economist articles are not by-lined and there is a collaborative approach to what they publish.
Yes, very much an establishment read and very sober reporting

StrippedFridge · 11/12/2020 09:06

There are at least two other recent articles too. All excellent, balanced, humane. I have been a subscriber for decades shows age I heartily recommend the Economist for consistently well thought through thought provoking material.

I wonder if the article was written by the excellent Helen Joyce? She's been on sabbatical from the Economist to write her book but I don't know if she's back yet.

nickymanchester · 11/12/2020 11:28

If you want to read the whole article you just need to register for free with an email address.

You don't need to subscribe to just read the one article.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 11/12/2020 15:10

Bumping because it's well worth a read. You'll need to do what Nicky suggests though and register with an email address.

Scautish · 11/12/2020 15:24

Can I just clarify that my posts were deleted as I had cut and paste the article (sorry MN, I did know I was probably breaking rules), not because I was being rude, goady or personally attacking anyone.

So yes, do the register thing to see article. It’s very good.

Outstanding article. Thanks for posting and here's to turning the tide so that young people are free to experiment without being sterilised
