Women and Equality Select Committee

Does anyone know what the deal is with the written submissions for the WESC? I submitted my evidence well within time and it is not showing on the Committees website. Worryingly, there are very few published submissions from individuals or groups from a GC background (and therefore women's concerns about self-ID are not available to see). I know from various email groups and this site that there have been many women submitting evidence and it is very concerning that this is not available.

Even more suspicious is that the submission at the current top of the pile (ie the first one available when looking) is from stonewall.

Am I being paranoid to suggest that this 'committee' is not impartial and is hiding evidence that conflicts with their desired outcome?

Thank you SorryauntLydia for alerting us to the latest uploads. I actually feel quite upset by some of the submissions , especially those from some Rape crisis or women’s aid services which pronounce they provide services to women and girls while including men in the definition of women. Some groups have been very busy indeed.

Angryresister · 13/01/2021 01:28

Oh and mine is still not there either

OhHolyJesus · 13/01/2021 08:27

The confidential submissions won't be published at all but the anon ones are coming through as are some very brave ones with people's names including Stephanie Hayton.

I wish I had time to read them all.

Stonewall will have been prepping all the Champions. Howwver we move, and we have been good at submitting and letter writing, they have the resources to be one step ahead. Having a bit of a downer on this at the minute. Have kept my positivity going but this is a hell of a mountain and if government don't do something, we will get swallowed.

Am just looking for a positive voice to cheer me up. I shouldn't really be negative, Lizz Truss has made a statement, so one wonders why this second call for evidence

MichelleofzeResistance · 13/01/2021 09:41

Ok, this is looking steadily more bent.

Is the Baroness aware of this?

The extra info re male offending patterns of transwomen from the Profs has been published. Also FPFW sent in extra info in this regard which the committee has rejected which looks very suspicious, they specifically ask for evidence and then refuse it.
Interesting thread by Maya.

Re publication, they said they'd email when its been uploaded, I think they're vetting them all first.

Hmm.
I hope this doesn't turn into a repeat of the 2016 inquiry.

"Were all affected groups represented, in the choice of witnesses to the Trans Inquiry?
In a word, no.
20 people were called as witnesses to the Inquiry, excluding MPs. 11 of these represented trans advocacy/ lobbying groups. 9 of these were more obviously ‘neutral’. No special advocates for other groups were called as witnesses. For instance:
· female-only groups and services,
· post-operative transsexuals against self-ID, and
· concerned parents of transitioning children
were not properly represented.
In the use of written submissions, there’s also a preponderance of trans advocates listened to, and the ignoring of other groups. To take just one example, 8 points made by transwoman Jane Fae appear in the Final Report. But written submissions such as those of transwoman Miranda Yardley, who is against self-ID; or the well-known academic Professor Sheila Jeffreys, don’t appear anywhere in the Final Report."

Can we challenge this process? FOI, parliamentary standards?

RosaFreedman1983 · 13/01/2021 12:15

Anecdotally, they had circa 2000 written submissions and (unusually) had no specialist advisers assigned to assist the committee or clerk. Given that each submission needs to be read before being published, and given the recent Parliamentary recess, I imagine it will take some time before all (or all that they quality assure, which is usual practice for select committees) are published. I'm not taking a position about this state of affairs, and I have no more information than what I have written here, but just thought this information might help MN posters to understand the delays.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/01/2021 12:16

Thanks Rosa, that's useful to consider.

HecatesCats · 13/01/2021 12:21

Thank you Rosa

Deltoids1 · 13/01/2021 12:23

I’m starting to read through the new submissions. I’ve already spotted similar prose in both the Proud Trusts (GRA0262) document and the one from Shropshire Youth Association (GRA0311).
Did Stonewall sent out set text to each Diversity Champion? Someone, somewhere did.
I’ll continue my reading and see if I can find some more.

Watermonster · 13/01/2021 12:24

I hear there is also a submission from children of transitioners yet to be published- another group hugely impacted but rarely heard from.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/01/2021 12:58

That's interesting, Deltoids.

stumbledin · 13/01/2021 15:07

hmmmmm ... This thread seems to be duplicating the recent postings here - would be good if they were somehow in the same place www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4089980-URGENT-Call-for-evidence-GRA?pg=6

SorryAuntLydia · 13/07/2021 14:51

Reviving this old thread to find out if your evidence was published? Mine wasn’t Hmm

Imnobody4 · 13/07/2021 15:39

I was wondering this the other day. There are now 847 responses published - the last in June so they are still uploading but at a glacial pace. Mine isn't there.
Presumably they can't go any further with proposals etc till they've published them.

oldwomanwhoruns · 13/07/2021 16:40

I've just searched on Anonymous, and there are only 2 such submissions published. Mine is not among them Angry
I most certainly submitted my evidence, and I had an email back to query whether it should be anonymous or not. But I did not receive any further communication from them.

Imnobody4 · 13/07/2021 17:21

I think they're supposed to let you know when your submission is published,

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 13/07/2021 17:31

they are still uploading but at a glacial pace

At this rate, the polar ice caps will have melted by the time they finish.

Shedbuilder · 13/07/2021 19:12

My partner and I and two of our friends made submissions: we shared them to compare what we'd put. I last checked a few weeks ago and none of them had been published. Given that the Scottish Parliament has decided not to published responses it makes me wonder...

oldwomanwhoruns · 13/07/2021 19:12

Ah thx @Imnobody4. I will hold my breath and wait. But I can't help wondering if someone is editing out the GC submissions. Perhaps they have given the job to the work experience student?

334bu · 13/07/2021 19:47

Mine is there but I don't remember getting an email. There was something about only accepting Word documents, if I remember correctly.

SorryAuntLydia · 13/07/2021 22:31

There are 12 posted as from ‘A member of the public’ and 2 from ‘anonymous’.

Correct me if I’m wrong - I hope I am - but reading the rules today it suggested that they don’t have to publish them all, just read them - although how you would know they had indeed read all the responses is unclear.
