I didn’t, maybe I missed the memo. But I find this breathtaking (and ridiculous..)

Transgender, or trans, is a broad, inclusive term referring to anyone whose personal experience of gender extends beyond the typical experiences of their assigned sex at birth. It includes those who identify as non-binary.
Under the Equality Act 2010, individuals who have proposed, begun or completed reassignment of gender enjoy legal protection against discrimination. A trans person does not need to have had, or be planning, any medical gender reassignment treatment to be protected under the Equality Act: it is enough if they are undergoing a personal process of changing gender. In addition, good practice requires that clinical responses be patient-centred, respectful and flexible towards all transgender people whether they live continuously or temporarily in a gender role that does not conform to their natal sex. General key points are that:
• Trans people should be accommodated according to their presentation: the way they dress, and the name and pronouns they currently use.
• This may not always accord with the physical sex appearance of the chest or genitalia.
• It does not depend on their having a gender recognition certificate (GRC) or legal name change.
• It applies to toilet and bathing facilities (except, for instance, that pre- operative trans people should not share open shower facilities).
• Views of family members may not accord with the trans person’s wishes, in which case, the trans person’s view takes priority.
Those who have undergone transition should be accommodated according to their gender presentation. Different genital or breast sex appearance is not a bar to this,

The medium article @Melroses posted says that it is, and was always intended to be a Same Gender, not Same Sex policy.

There have been numerous threads on this on MN if you do a search. The source documents are included there. It's astounding but true. Look up also Clare Dimyon, who was accused of discrimination for wanting a female medic for a mammogram!

The follow-up article about the computer system is worth a read too.

MRC20 is right - there are several past threads on the subject that are worth a read.

It’s shit but then I spent a week in hospital last year in a mixed sex ward so even without this policy you can have the pleasure of half dressed men wandering around.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 09/12/2020 15:42

@CarlottaValdez dreadful!
@MRC20 thanks, I’m still learning all about this I’ll definitely have a further read. @OhHolyJesus I will seek that out!!

Doesn't this go against the NHS Constitution, which states:

"The NHS also pledges: ... that if you are admitted to hospital, you will not have to share sleeping accommodation with patients of the opposite sex, except where appropriate, in line with details set out in the Handbook to the NHS Constitution"

And the 'Handbook to the NHS Constitution' states:

"Pledge: ‘The NHS pledges that if you are admitted to hospital, you will not have to share sleeping accommodation with patients of the opposite sex, except where appropriate, in line with details set out in the handbook to the NHS Constitution.’

Providers of NHS-funded care are expected to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation except where it is in the best overall interest of the patient involved, or reflects their personal choice.

This means that patients should not have to share sleeping accommodation with others of the opposite sex and should also have access to segregated bathroom and toilet facilities. Patients should not have to pass through opposite-sex areas to reach their own facilities. Women in mental health units should have access to women-only day spaces.

Sleeping accommodation includes areas where patients are admitted and cared for on beds or trolleys, even when they do not stay in hospital overnight. It therefore includes all admissions and assessment units (including all clinical decision units), plus day surgery and endoscopy. It does not include areas where patients have not been admitted, such as accident and emergency cubicles.

Single-sex accommodation can be provided in:
-single-sex wards (this means the whole ward is occupied by men or women but not both)
-single rooms with adjacent single-sex toilet and washing facilities (preferably en-suite)
-single-sex accommodation within mixed wards (for instance, bays or rooms that accommodate either men or women, not both; with designated single-sex toilet and washing facilities preferably within or adjacent to the bay or room)"

The NHS Constitution is here:

And the Handbook to the NHS Constitution is here:

Single sex accommodation is very important and is always to be provided for female types unless a male wants to be with them.

Then we kind of …. stuff all the important stuff for women, because a male person has needs.

And we absolutely don't have the imagination to be able to think of any other solution but throwing the rights and interests of women out of the window, and if some of them discharge themselves or can't access medical care because of this..... well, there's a male person with needs!

Bloody nonsense.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 09/12/2020 18:05

So this is an official NHS policy document deliberately and explicitly in breach of the NHS Constitution.

Then what is the point of the NHS Constitution, if it can be broken at will? What legal status does it have?
