Even those with successful medical and surgical transitions have spoken out about their unhappiness in the long term. Remember the rather sweet and lovely Leanne Mills who posted here for a while? Leanne is about as close as we’re likely to find in terms of someone in the U.K. who was already on the path to transition in the teen years (and even appeared on TV show about transition at the age of 19) and is now looking back with many years of experience.

(The above documentary features a young Stephen Whittle too)

I do worry that the current crop of young MtF transitioners are unable to see beyond the fun bit of late adolescence and early adulthood. It all seems very hot pants and nightclubs and beauty contests, which is fine when you are young but rapidly falls away when your peer group starts settling down and having babies.
The young FtMs seem to have strong relationships with each other and those who are same sex attracted can turn to the lesbian community for companionship (who are largely community minded enough not to reject them on transition!) and some of the transmen will have their own babies to raise, depending on their medical interventions...
but who will a young MtF transitioner like say, Jazz Jennings have, beyond Mom Jennings?
I feel Leanne’s sadness and isolation pour off the screen, yet young Leanne looked so hopeful and vibrant.
20 is no age, is it? Hope Lily is still happy with Lily’s teenage choices at 40, 60 & 80.
Hope you are OK out there, Leanne
