From about 10.10 to 10.20 this morning; Emma takes 'George' to task. In a nutshell, he thinks it's perfectly acceptable to leer out of his car window and shout rude things at young girls outside a school.

I just felt really really sorry for him. He has no self awareness. But so interesting to hear, well done Emma B

I heard that. Ugh! He made my skin crawl. Good to have the discussion on the radio. In my experience street harassment is directed mainly to young girls, it happened a lot to me between age 12 to 19ish not much after that. Which tells you a lot about the type of man doing it.

I need to bathe in Dettol now, I think. I can't say I felt sorry for him. He seems he has every right to act like this, clearly doesn't care if girls don't like it, and he sounds thick as two short planks. And I seriously doubt he's ever got a date out of it. 40 years old!!! At least he admits women are just objects to him.

Ugh the comment from "Steve" on yesterday's show too - might he respectfully suggest that schoolgirls don't wear skirts so short that they show their knickers. Glad to see he got pushback from other listeners.

And of course we had to have some "not all men/women do it too"-ing as well.

Thanks, I listened to this during my lunch break which was probably not the best idea. Its scary to think people like this walk among us, and I dread to think what he gets up to that he didn't share.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/11/2020 16:52

His excuses were pathetic. Men don't need women to be a certain age or to dress a certain way. When I started secondary school as a very skinny 11 year old with plaits in the early 80s, I had to walk to school along a major road of slow moving traffic. Every single day of secondary school I had to walk down that road with men in cars but mainly lorry drivers shouting obscenities to me and other girls. Because the traffic moved so slowly, they would keep up alongside you so you couldn't even escape, it was disgusting. These people were all George who in their heads were blaming me for their inability to be a civilised human by being being a girl in a school uniform walking down the road in the afternoon.

  1. Single. No kids. Loser.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/11/2020 17:23

I used to have to walk past a large building site at one point when they were building a council office near my school.

Filthy bloody bastard men yelling filth at a kid in school uniform.

DrDavidBanner · 24/11/2020 18:02

The part when he says "Women are objects". I mean I know this is how many men feel, but to hear him say it so matter of factly is just... I don't know. It just explains so much.

I found the perfect “woman” for George

And he’s single you say? How curious. I wonder is any of his pals or siblings have daughters (urgh)?

nosswith · 24/11/2020 18:28

Perhaps this is where 'misogynistic harassment' as an offence should start. With the punishment of a driving ban.

AvocadoBathroom · 24/11/2020 19:03

I got flashed at when I was 10, stopped and asked to get into a car at 13, actually pulled into a car and molested when I was 16...
About time this was addressed publicly.

Hes got a mum but shes a nice lady so thats different apparently Confused
RedDogsBeg · 24/11/2020 19:05

My flesh crawled listening to 'George', also noted he wouldn't like it if his mother was sexually harassed by men shouting out comments to her from the safety of their cars. Hypocritical and creepy.

Xanthangum · 24/11/2020 22:38

Hypocritical and creepy

How widespread is it? Is he an outlier?

I don't think he can be an outlier, can he, given how common this behaviour is? The only way he is an outlier is in his honesty in owning it.
