Fertility for Trans People

Came across this article, which is about a trans person's journey to egg harvesting and embryo freezing with a private fertility company called Hertility:
hertilityhealth.com/blog/fertility-for-trans-people-a-journey-to-embryo-freezing/

The whole thing makes me feel somewhat uncomfortable:

  • it's basically an advertorial for this private egg freezing company
  • It appears that the interviewee had no idea that transitioning would affect their fertility, found it triggering that this was raised as a side effect / outcome by the NHS clinic, but magically came around to the idea of invasive egg harvesting procedures when suggested by Hertility.
  • These invasive procedures are presented as an empowering personal choice.
  • The way that "all pathways to parenthood" are celebrated. Which in this case realistically implies potential surrogacy (presumably commercial) following testosterone treatment and uterus atrophy.
  • The company is called Hertility and most of the rest of their website emphasises their expertise in women's health, but it's unmentionable that Sorcha has female biology
  • Use of the word humxn - what does this even mean?

I'm aware that fertility companies are starting to market egg harvesting and egg freezing aggressively to women anyway as a way of 'having it all': extend your fertility and have your kids when your career is secure etc. This just feels like another way of commercialising and commodifying female reproductive function: you can't just get pregnant naturally, you need to use a whole host of dangerous, expensive and potentially exploitative procedures. And you should aspire to this as an example of female empowerment.

i can remember reading about this when it was something being promoted by Silicone Valley type companies to their employees and feeling it is a rather sinister way to control women's bodies and actually take away their freedom of choice.

Having experienced my own gynecolocical issues, I don't think this is something to be taken lightly and I don't think it is the magic pill its advertised as whoever its marketed towards, but I can imagine it being invasive, stressful and upsetting for many.

I don't think egg freezing is that successful in terms of pregnancy, though Hertility fails to mention this.

"In 2016, there were just 519 egg thawing cycles across the UK, up from 448 in 2015 (+16%)...In 2016, 39 babies were born to women using their own thawed eggs in treatment."

Egg harvesting is extremely arduous - I remember a family friend going through it for her sister when I was younger, and it was weeks of feeling ill (I have no idea if it's got better since, but I assume not really).

I'm wondering how this person managed with the 'gender dysphoria' as a result of being flooded with female hormones and stimulants for the ovaries to release multiple eggs.

I guess it's similar to what Freddy McConnell and Jake Graf had, only one went on to give birth themselves, the other had a woman do it for them.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a real can be quite dangerous. I hope more young people aren't going to be preyed upon by profiteering clinics.

Can you be considered infertile if you elect to undergo a procedure that with render you infertile but you do this by choice?

Not becoming a mother or father by choice is not the same as choosing to destroy your fertility.

It's not just you Joisan

No it's not just you Josian

Though Jake was and is on T Jake hasn't had SRS, at least nothing would indicate such. Jake has been very open about Jake's 'transition' so I would expect it to be mentioned had surgery been done.

Jake, like Freddy, has a GRC.

I struggle to understand how it wouldn't create an extreme reaction, almost an 'attack'of 'gender dysphoria'. Freddy M sort of addressed this question in a recent video but actually failed to answer the question. Freddy sort of explained it as two separate things, Freddy wanted a family and wanted to do this in the easiest way (Freddy has the biology but lacks the sperm) but Freddy says there was feelings of gender dysphoria before, during and after pregnancy in the Seahorse documentary.

My understanding is that Freddy was back in quite soon after giving birth as a result but this didn't affect breast milk production as Freddy has already had a mastectomy.

Use of the word humxn - what does this even mean?

Collective noun for mxn and womxn.

Usage handily subdivides the species into those degenerates who can handle the letter A in all its forms and the more evolved proper people whose inability to tolerate an A bracketed by an M and an N is a mark of their superior minds.
