Is it still OK to read Harry Potter?

This is my first ever thread but I thought this needed highlighting.

Article on “front page” of BBC website today

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5DdBBnrBnQt6vD2pVjZFs1Z/is-it-still-ok-to-read-harry-potter

What I really hate about this is the way the title is written. It sounds like the bbc are asking the question themselves, rather than the two individuals they interviewed.

This gives the question some sort of authority and there’s something out of proportion about it that I can’t articulate.

It was the title of a R4 programme that ran last week - yes, the title was provocative but, imo, the programme itself was interesting and reasonably balanced. There was a thread about it on the board.

persistentwoman · 20/11/2020 19:37

I think there was a thread about this recently OP ? This was broadcast on radio 4 - because of course the BBC wouldn't miss an opportunity to criticise a respected and exceptionally successful female author for commenting on matters relating to the "sacred caste"

MoonPomme · 20/11/2020 19:46

Is it ok to consume any bbc content when they harboured and supported a number of rapists/peadophiles/abusers for decades?
Fucking hypocrites.

Ah, thank you both very much. Seems I’m late to this particular bbc extravaganza!

Don’t worry OP! I’ve no doubt there will be another piece of BBC twattery about JKR soon! They can’t seem to help themselves.....

Melroses · 20/11/2020 20:33

I've had it with Radio 4 they followed the death of Jan Morris on Frontrow with someone wittering on about cis white gamers, so I switched over to Times and listened to Rachel Holmes talking about the wider lives of the Pankhursts, and Sylvia's career as a writer/editor etc.

R4 have genderism really badly.

Dh saw the headline and started asking about buying the Harry Potter books just to spite them . I think he was surprised that this whole business is somewhat more than a social media squabble

EarthSight · 20/11/2020 20:43

I can bet you that some of these people who are questioning if they should read the books, will still be doing it in private.

FloralBunting · 20/11/2020 20:47

Given that the BBC will be adapting the eagerly anticipated Troubled Blood as soon as COVID restrictions allow, I'm frankly baffled at their utterly bizarre desire to throw brickbats at JK Rowling.

wellthatsunusual · 20/11/2020 20:48

I heard the radio 4 programme last week and all I could think was that the presenter had too much time on her hands to be spending hours pondering how much her feelings were hurt by someone having the audacity to disagree with her.

If we all limited ourselves to things where we agree with the morals and viewpoints of the artist, we could kiss goodbye to most classical music, most art, most pop music, most films and a hell of a lot of literature.

Eowynthewarrior · 20/11/2020 22:38

The bbc gets worse worse everyday. I used to always read the news but it has got increasing tabloid nothing but wokeness, humourless, middle class, self obsessed wittering . Every article and programme seems to be lecturing . It’s like sitting next to an over earnest student bore at a dinner party

HecatesCats · 20/11/2020 22:46

The BBC is desperately chasing millennial/gen z audiences while alienating its base. Plus it's intent on shedding more expensive older staff in favour of younger, cheaper, multi skilled staff who are more likely to be 'woke'. It may save money but what it will do for audience figures remains to be seen.

To send the message, "we'll do business with you but we don't like you" knowing that JKR will most likely grind her teeth and put up with it. There are some pretty obvious historical parallels to that.
