OBJECT Now - Surrogacy Consultation

For those of you who were aware of the Runplestiltskin threads etc around the time that the Law Comission's public consultation was open you will remember the complex nature of the questions and how critical I and others were of the approach the Law Commission took.

OBJECT Now have a consultation of their own to critique their consultation.

docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMNUYNMwWbrf8SAWDTYCblElCI-yIIX9ZwnidqH7Xt5NXQsg/viewform

It took me 5 mins and I think it's worth doing. It's pretty simple and easy to follow, links are provided but for those in the know it will be even easier.

There are free text boxes to respond on your concerns for women and then in the second section on your concerns for children, all referencing the UN Charter for Rights of the Child etc.

It's worth doing as if the Women and Equalities Committee can call for evidence on how the GRA public consultation was conducted then maybe there is a small chance the same can happen for the Surrogacy consultation? Perhaps that's pie on the sky...

For a reminder on how the Law Commission created the consultation, who was involved and how they promoted it, here is the FOI Requestor who presented on Nordic Model Now's webinar on the same topic.

Thanks @OhHolyJesus
I did it earlier today, it wasn't difficult and took very little time, I tried to add some thoughtful if brief comments in the free text boxes but most of it is tick box. It does cover most of the key issues though so well done them for a thorough appraisal.

Bump

IloveJKRowling · 16/11/2020 10:13

Done

The UK Kennel Club recently reduced its recommended number of pregnancies per breeding bitch to 4 for health reasons. How concerned are you that no recommended maximum number of pregnancies for a woman participating in surrogacy is proposed?

Says it all really.

The UK Kennel Club treats female dogs and puppies better than they are proposing treating human women and human children.

It's really well written, it's mostly multiple choice - I'd recommend anyone do it who can. Even if you don't feel particularly well informed, it's so well written you will be well informed by the end with very little effort!

I had a pro surrogacy friend bleat on about poor little puppies taken from their mum and sold by unscrupulous dealers before they had been weaned. She's fine with human babies taken away from their mother at birth. Says it all.

Quick and easy to complete and very thorough.
One extra concern I raised is the use of ‘full surrogacy’ (ie where ivf is used, and the surrogate is not the genetic mother). This increases the risks of pregnancy, and there are also risks to egg retrieval. I think a distinction needs to drawn between cases where the eggs used are those of the intended social mother of the child, and cases where the eggs come from a paid donor.
The former scenario is the only situation in which I would find truly altruistic surrogacy acceptable. In the latter scenario the deliberate intent is to reduce the biological relationship between the child and its mother, in order to minimise its importance. Two gay men who want their own child by surrogacy do not NEED to use IVF - they WANT to create a child without a mother.

Thank you I will do this today

Delphinium20 · 16/11/2020 22:11

Thank you!!

Al1langdownthecleghole · 16/11/2020 22:31

Done. So much better process than the turgid LC version!

Campervan69 · 16/11/2020 22:33

How awful to deliberately create a motherless child. Can't imagine how that child will feel as they grow up.

Delphinium20 · 17/11/2020 01:23

This is so well done!

Fancycrackers · 17/11/2020 01:57

Done. Thank you for sharing. Reading these questions have left me feeling truly horrifiedSad

IloveJKRowling · 17/11/2020 09:19

I thought the compare and contrast with the UK Kennel Club guidelines was very informative.

Not only do they have more safeguards for the mothers but also for the pups (have to remain with Mum for 8 weeks).

So puppies and mother dogs have greater safeguards around their health and wellbeing than the law commission is proposing for humans.

It really makes clear the very nature of their consultation.
