Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Do you know any women in the Green Party?

SkyRita · 04/11/2020 23:15

The Green Party of England & Wales have a group called Green Party Women which is currently one of the few groups that are more dedicated to green issues and not just from a women's perspective.

Most women in the GP are unaware that this group exists and have not joined. As the systems and power-base are stacked against feminists and GC members, there have been increasing numbers of attempts to dscredit and oust the current committee.

Could I ask feminists on MN to ask friends, colleagues and acquaintances if they know any women who are in the GPEW? We need all women to apply for membership of Green Party Women by tomorrow, Thursday 5th November, to ensure that they have a vote in the committee elections due to start soon. There are so many women who have expressed disquiet about the toxic push within the GP in favour of identity politics and abandonment of climate and environmental issues, and feel they have no opportunity to input to the direction of policy. This is their chance to have their say.

Gerbil - yes. It was never going to be a quick fix, as with the entire pushback to regain a foothold with our rights. We have all been battling away in the background and at times it appeared to be a hopeless situation, but slowly and surely we are making headway.
We signed up for the long haul and the efforts and actions of everyone who cares about women's rights and spaces are appreciated more than anyone can imagine.

Solidarity and thanks to everyone who is helping.

Voting is open. Could I be reminded of the most women friendly candidates please? Many thanks!

CrossPurposes · 14/12/2020 20:00

Though reading through their candidates with some it is more obvious than others :-)

SkyRita · 14/12/2020 22:22

Ok, here goes!

These are the names I'd choose on the ballot. Other names are available if anyone so wishes, but these women are either neutral or in favour of women's sex-based rights. Neutral is good too as they are fair and interested in the climate change aspects of the GPEW, not the destructive identity politics that is tearing the Party apart. Those who are interested in women's sex-based rights are very keen on seeing the Party they love returning to its roots and fighting climate change on the political front.

Co-Chair (2 positions):
Emma Bateman & Rebecca Johnson

Secretary
Christine Holt

Membership Secretary
Claudine Letsae

Treasurer
Nicola Watson

Non-Portfolio
Faty Kane & Julia Lagoutte (job share)
Gillian Mills
Charlie Hamilton

@CrossPurposes, I really couldn't possibly comment about some of the other candidates and which sex they were 'assigned' at birth Wink.

IMPORTANT

Please vote for RON if you don't wish to vote for any of the other candidates. You do not need to vote for any additional names other than your choice(s) and voting for RON ensures that they will not get any extra 'points'.

Thanks @SkyRita I've voted and as you say the ones who were more focused on the reason why I'm a Green Party member (i.e. climate change!) were the ones I voted for.

Socrates11 · 15/12/2020 12:41

Thanks SkyRita, that's made it much clearer. I think the current group deserve support for getting the group set up, as well as their politics. Not an easy task & not keen on others coming in and stealing their hard graft. Any hint of 'intersectional' in the blurb & you pretty much know critical thought has been breached!

Thanks all!

Why do we want to get more GC women into GPW, when the party policy is clear on the fact that trans men are men and trans women are women? If there are women who are members of the GP and do not agree with that policy, they should not try to take over the women's wing of the party, but, instead, form their own group. If there is sufficient support they will have a large group and a large say. A hijack of the GPW by those with views that oppose party policy is not fair on other women members. I am interested in joining GPW but do not want my membership to then be used for views for which I did not join.

Thanks for helping others to understand the problems here Myriad, the more comments like this, the more it will help to peak others and to realise that yes, the GPEW is still worth voting for.
Of course there's no consideration given to the take-over by those promoting identity politics in your post. That is what happened a few years ago and turned the GPEW on its axis.

You will be able (as is everyone) to vote for your choice. The readers of this post will too, no matter which way they choose.

I have been contacted by many people within the GPEW who expressed dismay when they realised that the people they had voted for in the Leadership elections, did not share their views on identity politics and extremism.
You might be surprised to find that Green Party Women are much more interested in green issues than those who wish to promote identity issues and pronouns.

Me neither. I joined a party that knew what women were and recognised the importance of sex in relation to the environment. Unfortunately the policy was changed at a conference that was poorly attended because of the weather, and when many those with caring responsibilities had left to get their kids to school. Motions about "trans issues" are not popular in the conference voting prioritisation and I would be massively surprised if the majority of members actually believed the dogma that TWAW, TMAM and NB IDs are valid, or whatever it is.

Socrates11 · 15/12/2020 19:17

Lol Myriad, the GC women did establish the Green Party women's group, it's the non-women that need to stay out of it & set their own groups up. Party policy is supposed to be agreed on by members, and as a member I'd prefer science & reason over cult-like, meaningless mantras.

SkyRita · 15/12/2020 23:19

Myriad, my statement was addressed to all women and not just GC voters. There is no restriction on women joining, whether or not they have GC opinions.
