I cannot recommend this film highly enough

For readers who enjoy films depicting Orwellian themes relating to brainwashing, scapegoating, oppression, the lunatics running the asylum and an insane world in which oppressed women and girls are coerced into making bizarre false statements that support the privilege of a powerful minority, this film is for you.

The film is beautifully directed by Rungano Nyoni, an astonishing accomplishment for a first time director, the cinematography and use of colour and tone are breathtaking.

The central performance by Maggie Mulubwa as Shula, an innocent little girl fasely accused of being a witch, is heartbreaking and magnificent.

This is a nuanced, muti-layered film with many resonances with current events of concern to feminists.

I am not sure how much longer this film will be available to view for free on More 4, but I would recommend that readers check it out as it is very thought provoking and powerful.

In English and Nyanja language with subtitles.

hooda, Thank you so much. I am very glad to have seen that film. It is really beautiful and terrible and the combination of superstition and officialdom is horribly recognisable.
