Hope this is a share token. This is a really moving story about Tracey written by Decca Aitkinhead. I have really understood her work more and more as I've got older and whatever anyone else thinks of it, she's definitely broken new ground for women in art.

I thought she was worth a support thread here.

She's had it very rough recently hasn't she?

I don't think that's a share token OP - you need to click on the little black envelope beside the word share that takes you to a blank email where you can cut and paste the share token link:

Would really like to read this, but am not a subscriber.

It was a very moving article. Poor Tracey. That is such a horrendous thing to happen, and so sad, especially the bits about wanting her vagina back, and feeling like seeing Christmas will be a win.

I confess to being somewhat left cold by her conceptual art, but I love her drawings.

pippitysqueakity · 29/10/2020 21:18

Oh, thanks persistent.❤️

Glitterbiscuits · 29/10/2020 21:20

Her Desert Island Discs episode is fascinating.

Tracey love, come over to Mumsnet for a chat

“Being known for what I do is quite a good thing,” she muses. “So I have that on one hand. And then I have the shit on the other. You get a reputation for one thing …” Being difficult? “Yeah. And I think the biggest price I’ve paid was with my work. A lot of my work I was accused of moaning or whingeing or whining. ‘Oh, she’s banging on about rape again.’ Well, yeah, I was raped. Or, ‘Oh God, not the abortion.’ Well, I’m sorry. Lots of women have abortions. Yeah, I’m constantly trying to explain these things, and have been for the past 30 years.”

I read this today. Incredible woman. ♥️

ArabellaScott · 29/10/2020 21:26

Thanks for the share. That's very sad, and beautifully written. I hope she heals.

BestIsWest · 29/10/2020 21:30

So hard for her. I wish her well Flowers

Candleabra · 29/10/2020 21:31

I had no idea. Thank you for sharing. I also love her drawings.

GingerBeverage · 29/10/2020 21:34

Thanks. There's no one else quite like her. So astonishingly open about her traumas as a woman, it's discomforting and brilliant.
Wishing her well.

I've wanted to read that article all day. Thank you OP for sharing it Flowers

I love her artwork. I also lost my Dad to squamous cell cancer and I remember his strained eyes too. So, so sad.

katienana · 29/10/2020 21:48

That's so awful, poor Tracey. I think her work is amazing and she's achieved so much as a working class woman, she really should be celebrated more.

pippitysqueakity · 29/10/2020 21:48

Thank you for signposting this OP.
Sad read. Wishing her peaceful days ahead.

Happyface120 · 29/10/2020 21:49

Gosh, how heartbreaking...

Shedbuilder · 29/10/2020 21:56

That's so sad. I love her honesty. I wish her the best.

MaudTheInvincible · 29/10/2020 21:56

Munch’s work was self-involved, she points out, “but he wasn’t criticised for it”.

A reputation for messy emotional incontinence feels particularly unfair to Emin when she is actually “a really organised person."

Well, it's because she's a woman. Misogyny, innit.

IHateCoronavirus · 29/10/2020 22:11

I love how honest her work is about being a woman. Life isn’t easy, she doesn’t hide that. I hope she gets her vagina back and has many happy, healthy years with it.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 29/10/2020 22:12

The older she gets the more I appreciate her work and relate to it. What she has suffered is so awful. Unimaginable in fact. I hope she recovers.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 29/10/2020 22:12

I'm so glad to see this.
I read the article yesterday and cried like a baby. So incredibly moving.

HecatesCats · 29/10/2020 22:14

Oh my, that was a difficult read. My heart goes out to her. Tracey Emin was one of the women I thought of when Caitlin Moran claimed numerous firsts for herself. The Sensation exhibition was totally mind blowing for me. I didn't entirely get her, but I saw how brave and brazen she was and unapologetically honest. Sex, abortion, rape, she's covered it all and she's received so much flack. Now I think about it, when I was younger I saw that she was criticised for being a 'gobby' woman, for not being a proper artist and I saw the misogyny in that, but I didn't perhaps appreciate the underlying discomfort with her vocalising/visualising the experience of being female. Would have liked to delve more into her comments about the 90s obsession with conceptual art (not that that interview could have gone any other way after the cancer revelation). I think she was very savvy back then and grasped every opportunity, but she's a wonderful figurative artist and I love the drawings and paintings. I can see why she might feel she lost time. I hope that she finds comfort in her new home.

Pluckedpencil · 29/10/2020 22:27

Gutted for her. What a favour she has done to a lot of people with bladder cancer though, opening up the subject, bringing it into the light. She has a tenacity, a singularity, that is really compelling. Her honesty is the striking thing about her art and you can hear it in this interview too. Hope her new house is the start to the next chapter, may it be a long and happy one.

derxa · 29/10/2020 22:30

I love her and get her art. As a fellow cancer person this year I wish her all the best. Fuck cancer Tracey Flowers
