LGB Alliance Ireland launched (getting lots of flack)

Hi everyone, LGB Alliance Ireland launched this week. This is their twitter page twitter.com/Ire_LGBAlliance?s=09

They've got a lot of flack about them being British T**fs bring their hateful ideas to Ireland etc. (Infecting our poor sweet innocent Irish colleens with their British ideas Hmm That is the tone of the reaction).

Some of the replies here will give you an idea of the hyperbolic reaction, and also the quote tweets
twitter.com/Ire_LGBAlliance/status/1320845845810597888?s=19

Unsurprisingly Pink News and Gay Community News (like an Irish version of Pink News) have run with the evil Brits line.

Just to clarify I'm not involved directly with the Alliance but support it.

The funny thing is that the people so desperate to say TW can be women and lesbians don't seem to realise that even if that was true (which it isn't) they would have more privaledge than any other woman or lesbian in history. TW have never been banned from marrying on the grounds of being lesbians. Of all the lesbians out there, only "cis" lesbians were ever prevented from marrying their partners. Could that be because homophobia is based on what kind of genitalia you're attracted to, rather than your preference for people who might like to wear pink? TW have never been banned from voting, owning property, having a job etc on the grounds that they're women. That particular form of oppression was reserved exclusively for "cis" women. Could it be that misogyny is based on what kind of genitalia you have, rather than on who prefers the colour pink? So if TW are really lesbians they have more privaledge than any other lesbians in history because they are the only lesbians who always had the same rights as straight people. If they are women they have more privaledge than any other woman in history because they are the only women who always had the same rights as men.

The LGBa exists to support people who actually experience oppression on the basis of their sexuality. Even if TW can be lesbians (they can't) they don't need anything from them because they already have, and always have had, all the same rights as straight people.

Between taking full advantage of their straight male privaledge, and stealing all the resources set aside to empower actual LGB people and women, trans lesbians are probably the most privaledge group on the planet. They get all the resources rightfully afforded to people who experience oppression, but without having to experience any of the actual oppression. Pretty good grift if you ask me.

TW in the UK, that rant refers to. Obviously TW in other countries do have some real problems (but they still aren't women or lesbians).

According to a tweet currently knocking about with a link to Companies House, LGBA are

Malcolm Clark (58)
Katherine Harris (66)
Beverly Jackson (69)
and
Anne Marie Sinnott (71)

The average age of people going to Pride in Europe is 29.

One is mindful of the old Bill Hicks quote about the 'War on Drugs' being lost because the side against drugs were like the red-coated colonials fighting Indians in the jungle.

I mean it'd be almost funny if it weren't so absolutely pathetic.

I think it's brilliant. We LGB people face a common set of experiences and barriers which have nothing in common with people wanting to change sex. If we could change sex at will we wouldn't be LGB!

It's right that we should once again have pressure groups which represent our unique needs.

RuffleCrow · 31/10/2020 23:51

A little bit of ageism there @lisz

MaudTheInvincible · 31/10/2020 23:52

No ineffective movement would engender that level of resentment.

Indeed. Keep pulling!

GrainneMhaol · 01/11/2020 02:31

LGB Alliance Ireland is definitely Irish-run.

Great that Ireland has LGBA now. The article smacks of playground bullies saying 'but you have to be my friend cos I say so...'

Really hoping this helps open some eyes in this country

FionaMacCool · 01/11/2020 10:00

"A trans woman being granted refuge in a women's-only space is not of harm to cisgender women."

I wish this were true...but it blatantly is not. And it is wishful thinking to imagine that it could be true.
Not grounded in reality at all, at all, Emma.

RuffleCrow · 01/11/2020 17:12

Transwomen have Christ-like status within the church of gender orthodoxy, for reasons which are never explained. Apparently they're incapable of harming other people (they're "without sin"). This holds true however many transwomen sex offenders and murderers may appear in the news. Confused

ArabellaScott · 01/11/2020 17:24

"A trans woman being granted refuge in a women's-only space is not of harm to cisgender women."

How on earth do they come to that conclusion? Some kind of magic incantatory spell that renders transwomen uniquely harmless? And the women who have recently taken the govt to a judicial review to explain exactly how and why transwomen are of harm, how is that explained? Is it bigotry to have been raped/assaulted in prison by a transwoman, or is it just bigotry to actually mention the fact?

GrainneMhaol · 11/11/2020 00:28

There was an awful piece about the LGB Alliance in the Irish Independent over a week ago (however it is likely this is the first time most of the readers got any inkling about what is going on, so a win for us I think)
m.independent.ie/opinion/comment/lgb-must-stand-with-t-in-the-fight-against-transphobia-39688679.html

And thankfully the paper gave the LGB Alliance a space to reply with their own article, which drew attention to some key issues

Harris and Jackson were the women on the very first committee of the Gay Liberation Front afaik. That was 50 years ago so fair play to them for keeping up the struggle.

Good news-ish GrainneMhaol.
