Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The Big Lie - how the WEP was always about gender rather than sex

An anonymous blog by a WEP insider hosted on Graham Linehan's website.

"^When the Women’s Equality Party (WEP) was co-founded in March 2015 by author Catherine Mayer and TV presenter Sandi Toksvig at the annual Women of the World festival, held at the Southbank Centre in London, tens of thousands of women rushed to join, feeling for the first time that a political party had been formed that was dedicated to us. After all, we were in the name!

Since then thousands of women have been leaving, feeling let down by a party that was meant to be for women & girls and our rights. But it is a mistake to think that WEP was captured by gender ideology – it was founded on gender ideology. We women will never ‘recapture’ it as it was never ours to begin with.^

It has always annoyed me that they have taken the spot of "women's party" that could have been filled by an actual party for women.

It is annoying. Any chance of a Women's Rights Party, anyone?

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 23/10/2020 15:46

I think that far from voting for them I would actively campaign against the WEP now.

Particularly disappointed in Sandi Toksvig. Always hoped she had a bit more about her, but she was obviously up to her eyeballs in the whole con from the get go too.

Escapeplanning · 23/10/2020 15:50

I think you have to be strongly egotistical to start a political party in your own image. The party has more or less rejected people who aren't clones in terms of their opinions. The sad fact is their policies are poorly reseached and badly set out.

The equal pay policy motion at Conferences cites a Guardian article as the only policy justification. The article by a male journalist quotes figures that are easy to trace back to the source and are nonsense.

Embarrassing. The Women's Equality Party Equal Pay spokesperson quotes a Guardian bloke journalist's dodgy data without any sense checking and expects to be taken seriously?.

Just awful.

Do Fair Play for Women / WPUK have any ambitions in that direction?

I personally think that their success so far, especially Fair Play For Women, is precisely because they are not a political party. They can reach out to the general public and appeal to people of all political persuasions because there is no underlying current of 'in it for the votes'.

Isn't the point of a political party to group people who all agree with each other on most things?

I can’t find the screenshots right now but Sandi Toksvig knows exactly what a woman is AND what a lesbian is. She’s joked on QI about lesbians not being into penis. She just doesn’t have the guts to follow that its logical conclusion.

We could call it POW. Power of Women.

I think WPUK is too close to the Labour Party. FPFW is determinedly apolitical so definitely not.

Genuinely mortified for Sandi Toksvig. I'm embarrassed for her. I thought she was more intelligent than that.

I can understand as a lesbian Sandi would object to a male penis but surely she'd be willing to accept lady penis? Not as if she'd be transphobic.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 23/10/2020 17:28

oh bloody hell

WEP make me so furious, with their belief that letting men stay overnight on maternity wards is some sort of vote winning policy that women will get behind

like everyone lives in their world, the unimaginative twerps

Clymene · 23/10/2020 17:48

Yeah the maternity ward thing really brought home to me how teeth achingly middle class WEP was. All their meetings here were at 6pm and I emailed (as a founding member) saying that it was time for kids tea/bedtime and I couldn't get out at that time as a single mother.

I got a reply saying that it was after work and so convenient for most women but they'd consider making meetings at different times. Never heard another word and so I left.

The WEP was never about all women, and never pretended to be although I did think they were about rights for cunty women rather than anyone who identified as such so this has shocked me.

I also thought Meyer had buggered off so learning that she's lifetime president (and toksvig is lifetime something else) is v disappointing.

I'm surprised the woman who wrote the article is still in. Some women were asking women for support the other day, still hopelessly believing they can change it from the inside. Clearly that was never going to happen and will never happen

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 23/10/2020 18:01

god, you didn't expect to participate in politics as a single mother did you Clymene ?

they were going to save you and tell you what was best for you, it wasn't your place to participate or help decide

good heavens

Clymene · 23/10/2020 18:22

Grin I'm surprised she didn't ask me why the nanny couldn't put the children to bed

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 23/10/2020 18:25

Women in shelters or prisons were never going to be on WEP’s radar.

Melroses · 23/10/2020 18:30

I always thought it was more a naice, kind, inclusive party for head girl types and their friends. I remember Sandi left The News Quiz to go and work on it and presented something on television instead.

I was never sure what they were intended to do, with us all being equal now and all that. Then it turned out that some people are not so equal when anyone is a woman. But that is ok if everyone can be a woman. Apaz.

That poem is absolutely outstanding!!

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 23/10/2020 20:34

the fact that Catherine Mayer and Sandi Toksvig gave themselves lifetime positions within the party is very revealing

this was for them, not for women as a class, wasn't it? after a couple of years of the proles taking an interest, they wanted to make very sure that no-one could take their toy away from them

DidoLamenting · 23/10/2020 23:49

Toksvig is the female Stephen Fry. The are both very fond of themselves, dazzled by their own brilliance and desperate to be National Treasures.
DoveStar42 · 24/10/2020 08:27

I was a founding member of the WEP. I had no idea that they did not know what a woman was (I guess why should I?) When women actually start to wake up about the takeover of women’s rights and identity I think all hell is going to be let loose. Waiting for very real earthquake for gender ideology .. women’s/girls rights and even children’s safety is at risk. I am telling everyone I know, we need to get the word out.
