"Today, 20th Oct, BBC Woman's Hour hosted an excellent discussion on the politicization of Mumsnet with feminist scholar Sarah Pederson (at approx 25mins). The discussion looked at the growth of the popular Mumsnet feminist discussion boards and their role in promoting a nascent women's movement advocating women's rights, in particular informing discussion on GRA reform.

Womans Place UK, Fair Play for Women and FiLiA were highlighted as groups popular with and representative of women's rights issues. At this point Jane Garvey, the BBC presenter felt it necessary to interject "we have to be clear, which are groups that some people have describe, in some circumstances, as transphobic".

FiLiA, FPFW and WPUK are not transphobic. It is not acceptable for a BBC journalist to repeat libellous comment about us as if it is fair comment or a balancing of the discussion. There is simply no basis in fact for this comment to be made. It is the repetition of misogynist slander to which too many women are subjected.

These comments are seriously prejudicial to the reputations of women involved with these organisations, some of whom have previously been invited on the programme. We urge BBC Woman's Hour to correct this inaccurate reporting and we would like to thank Sarah Pederson for her excellent and informative analysis of the feminist phenomenon that is Mumsnet."

Now would be a very good time for FPFW, WPUK and FiLiA to really push the BBC on this, and for us to really get behind them.

It's all change at Woman's Hour. Dame Jenni has gone, and is ungagged. Jane Garvey is clock watching and counting down the days until she's off. And Emma Barnett will be watching the way the wind's blowing very closely. If the production team can't find the courage to step up reflect and represent the interests of their target audience without apology, the entire programme has become a pointless sham.

Be great if the women’s groups pitched a new Woman’s Two Hours- with better quality ‘magazine’ content like they already have plus a current affairs relevant to women section for the extra hour. Smile

ChattyLion · 20/10/2020 22:12

Could well be, Even. Be great if this low becomes a bit of a turning point for WH though, if the groups press it.

EvenSupposing · 20/10/2020 22:44

Yeah absolutely. I do think this is one of those 'this is indefensible' moments that need pressing on.

littlbrowndog · 20/10/2020 22:48

Here this is what women’s hour or the women’s hour that pretends to be about women

That’s an excellent tweet. Flowers

This cheered me up. 😁 last night after being defamed on WH, they were attended a Lib dems complaints meeting about more false accusations, and donations went up £1k 💕

It's really shitty that the BBC felt the need to caveat that 'some people' think this way. Do they provide that warning to all groups who stand for something that someone else doesn't like?
It's a bit like the statement from the Index/censorship body that exists for the purpose of free speech and yet in their recent statement, also heavily loaded the bias.
So much for impartiality.

MerchedCymru · 21/10/2020 10:55

Please do complain to the BBC. It only takes 5 minutes.
And then have a dig if you can - would be great if this gratuitous slur boosted FPFW's crowd-funder.
It's an endless round of Whack-a-Mole isn't it?

Manderleyagain · 21/10/2020 11:21

That moment stuck out as weird & uncomfortable because otherwise it was a really good segment. It was informative & flowed well. Sarah pederson did really well but she was given the chance to do really well by jg asking good questions. Overall it would have brought people here, rather than putting them off. It was a shop window for fwr. But I expect that's why the beeb didn't want to be seen promoting this place & the 3 orgs mentioned because we are undeniably one 1 side of a 2 sided argument, so they felt the need to situate the discussion in that 2 sided argument once gra came I to the conversation. But she did it terribly by defaming the 3 campaign groups. It didn't sound like jg believed what she was saying. It's a shame because apart from that bit I felt finally WH are actually dealing with the topic honestly & in a more free way. But then clunk!

The 3 organisations are right to make their statement which is v good. And I agree now is a good time to try & encourage WH to deal with this issue properly going forward.

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/10/2020 11:40

I'd like this to lead to an additional chapter to an updated copy of Sarah's book...

I complained yesterday under the heading of 'Bias'. It didn't take long to do and made me feel much better.

Yes, this is a really clear example of the BBC's bias: Jane Garvey has given us a gift here and we need to use it. By 'we' I mean the women's organisations that have been slandered. Has any reference been made to the incident on today's WH? I have had work to do and missed it.
nothingcomestonothing · 21/10/2020 13:35

I've complained, it did make me feel marginally better. Lazy woke bastards.

Clymene · 21/10/2020 13:56

Once you have submitted your complaint, unless the bbc make a public retraction, I suggest we escalate to ofcom.

I'm so disappointed in JG. I enjoy listening to Fortunately but that's going in the bin now.
