Social media censorship in the last week

ripx4nutmeg · 18/10/2020 13:45

Hi all - I just wanted to detail some of the social media censorship of accounts that disagree with trans ideology, which I've witnessed in the last week.

As you may know, I have a Twitter account that's got about 7,000+ followers. A number of people with smaller accounts, or people who don't want to be doxxed, send me information that's almost always in the public domain anyway, to generate more interest.

Last weekend I posted a story from a medical website in which a surgeon who carries out phalloplasties said that '80 to 90%' of them suffer from 'complications' as a result of the surgery. I commented that I wasn't convinced that this surgeon had the best interests of their patients at heart given those numbers, and for that received a 7 day suspension.

I was told by Twitter I'd still be allowed to direct message other accounts during the suspension, but after 36 hours this facility was removed - I could receive DMs but could no longer reply.

I set up a Facebook account so that the stories could still be posted. Within seconds of the page following gender critical accounts like Standing For Women, this page was suspended, with Facebook demanding to see official identification to prove who I am. (Ironically Facebook will ban accounts for not respecting someone's self ID, but only accepts official ID to reinstate them). I sent them my birth certificate, but after nearly a week now, the account has not been reinstated, no information given.

This week we've seen the rapper Azealia Banks have her Twitter account permanently suspended for saying that money for trans surgeries should be diverted to farmers who feed people during a pandemic and Dr Jane Harris' account was removed for doing a rolling eyes gif about gender being 'assigned' at birth. Kellie-Jay also received a Facebook ban this week for acknowledging someone's biological sex.

When you factor in that Twitter and Facebook both censored a negative story about Joe Biden this week (Twitter wouldn't even let you post the URL to the New York Post story), it's clear that the censorship on the two platforms has hit new levels of dystopia against any account that appears to be anti woke in the run up to the US election. So, while my Twitter account has been reinstated, it's clear it won't last for very long, and I don't think I should hasten its demise by posting on there until after the US election (for what it's worth I'm not exactly inspired by either candidate and I'll hopefully be on Mumsnet, Glinner's email and Parler anyway).

While this censorship is terrifying I'm not that pessimistic because of the hundreds of messages of goodwill I've received in the last week - when I first started talking about this in 2017 most of the limited feedback was negative; there's so much awareness now and what's needed most in my opinion is for this momentum to continue.

Thanks to everyone who messaged me, particularly some of the incredible offers such as giving me their social media accounts (all refused). As one person emailed me last night: 'We will prevail'.

Its very sinister isnt it. I do hope you stick around. Yes, we will prevail. Imo the very fact all this is happening means they are running scared.

happydappy2 · 18/10/2020 14:07

It was Megan Murphy getting banned from twitter that made me pay attention to what was happening. The more they try and silence our voices, the more of us will be compelled to speak out. There are more of us who don’t want gender ideology pushed on our children, than the few who do. We’re winning.

yourhairiswinterfire · 18/10/2020 14:13

It is incredibly sinister, and I'm stunned at how easily it's happened, too. Dark times ahead if we don't continue pushing back against it.

Nancydrawn · 18/10/2020 14:19

Well, seeing as the FBI is investigating whether the Biden emails are part of a Russian disinformation campaign, that credible news outlets are reporting that Giuliani has been under investigation as a target of Russian intelligence, and that the laptop story has more holes than a sieve, I think Twitter has a point. They allow plenty of anti-Biden messages to be posted. But I don't see why they should be forced to collude in Russia's (alleged) attempts to undermine the electoral process.

I’m not especially prominent on twitter (My handle is different there and I’m happy to provide it if necessary) but if there’s anything I can do to share the load, so to speak, please let me know. Your account has been a go to for many new GC joiners as well as being known for consistently shedding light on the myriad of goings on that we may have missed otherwise. Thank you for all the work you’ve done as well x

wellbehavedwomen · 18/10/2020 14:27

For all the annoyance people feel about Mumsnet moderation: thank God for Mumsnet. It's what got me on board, and I know the same applies for thousands of other women. It's the one space women's voices are allowed, and unpalatable evidence survives and can be seen. A women owned, women dominated space on the internet is so rare, and it's valuable.

wellbehavedwomen · 18/10/2020 14:30

Also want to thank you, Nutmeg. I couldn't begin to do Twitter - too many truly horrible people - so thank you.

And thank you to all those who consistently wade through the ordure, to speak up for women.

GratedExposure · 18/10/2020 14:33

Thanks for letting us know this @ripx4nutmeg. It's so important that we all see the mechanics of manipulation. My hope with all of this is that more of us will see that large platforms and media corporations are not primarily driven by truth. I don't dismiss things as "nutty conspiracy theory" anywhere near as easily these days.

GratedExposure · 18/10/2020 14:34

And yes, for all our quibbles, thank you, @Mumsnet.

BovaryX · 18/10/2020 14:40

The power concentrated in the hands of big tech makes legacy media barons look parochial. The narrow political orthodoxy which dominates silicon valley permeates every social media platform. Tech is not neutral. Politically motivated censorship should be a concern for everyone who values freedom of speech.

❤️❤️❤️❤️*@ripx4nutmeg* you're awesome. thank you for your part in the rising awareness and momentum 💐🌷🌹🥀🌺🌸🌼🌻

I’ll decide for myself whether I believe stories in shitty Murdoch rags.

I don’t want Twitter deciding what I can read.

Dragonhag · 18/10/2020 15:00

I’ll have to keep my eyes on this forum more, and on Twitter less, then. Twitter is a hellsite, I become more furious and disillusioned daily.

Flashmaggie · 18/10/2020 15:04

This censorship campaign needs exposure by the media, and there are some journalists who will write or talk about the destructive nonsense of transgenderism. James Kirkup at The Spectator, for example, Hannah Barnes at Newsnight, and a paper I never expected to praise - The Daily Mail. I'm less familiar with the American press, but the LA Times sounds promising. The two social media giants are desperately trying to suppress any legitimate criticism of the trans industry or its propaganda because they're part of it and doubtless employ many of its results, but the dam will burst, I'm sure of it.
Meanwhile, I anticipate my suspension any time soon.

SheRasBra · 18/10/2020 15:12

I've always been a little doubtful about the influence of the bigger internet companies in this but I have to say, the real eye opener for me was looking at what was posted for transmen taking T. There are no images about 'bottom growth' (the thing that all detransitioners say they hated the most), only cutesy pics of Trans YouTubers with astonished faces and an aubergine emoji over their groin. 'You grow a Penis!'

When you consider that you can find almost anything on the internet, you must wonder if this content isn't being censored. Having said that, phalloplasties searched are fairly explicit.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 18/10/2020 15:16

Thank you @ripx4nutmeg for putting your head above the parapet and standing up for women. I hope you'll continue to do so.

FairFriday · 18/10/2020 15:16

I’m just here to wave. Helooooo.

TenaciousWeeV · 18/10/2020 15:34

Same happened to me for replying to that vile ...C*ntress, with same wrds they used. They are still there?

NRatched · 18/10/2020 15:40

The suspensions are often ridiculous, but this one I don't understand at all really. As surely even TRAs who mass report would find it concerning that there was such a high complication rate and something is clearly not right, so should be 'on your side' on that one if they cared about actual trans people. Surely?

I just reported them as others had warned they were quite aggressively and pre-emptively reporting gc accounts. Gratified to see twatter acknowledged that they has breached t&c, but bet they didn’t get banned. Also, power to you, it’s only the presence of sane strong voices there that stop me leaving. ✊🌹
Whatwouldscullydo · 18/10/2020 15:44

I wondered what had happened to you. I'm not on twitter but do look at your page regularly.

Never seen you post anything offensive or nasty.

These surgeries should be held to equal stands of any other surgeries with negative outcomes documented for scrutiny alongside the positive amd all those in between. How else do people decide what dr to pick or where to seek help.

MedusasButterDish · 18/10/2020 15:54

So glad to see you somewhere hopefully outside the realm of those illiberals!

I'm grateful to have the means to support Mumsnet, but am also proud to have done so @JustineMumsnet

Annasgirl · 18/10/2020 16:02

I read about this on the grinner email. I have also read some items from female tech journalists - not explicit to this but highlighting the make up of who runs social media and the frightening reality of algorithms and how they are now running our lives and deciding who gets medical care in the US (again, highlighting that all of these algorithms are written by men, for a world where men are the default).

I worry about how we are going to manage to organise and enact change when we cannot even communicate. I think women the world over need to understand that big tech is 100% under the control and influence of men and I would argue most of them are misogynists. I mean, listen to the accounts of any women who was employed in a tech start up - not very inspiring.

ArabellaScott · 18/10/2020 17:03

Thanks, nutmeg, for your Twitter work. It must be pretty grim over there.

AuntGertrude · 18/10/2020 17:28

Thank you for all your efforts on Twitter - it has been a rather depressing week, in that regard. Very frustrating when really what needs to be said, needs the reach of something like FB or Twitter - being on Parler feels more like an echo chamber than a place where occasionally an issue can get picked up by a blue-tick name and brought out into the clear light of day with millions of views-worth of exposure.

Thank God for Mumsnet.
