Do men think it's their right to give women dirty looks?

Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid but I feel like I often get dirty looks from men, usually in places like shops. I've just been to the supermarket and as I got out of the car a man was standing next to his car giving me a filthy look. I put my mask on and he said in a really irritated voice as if I was stupid 'You don't need to put your mask on until you're actually IN the shop' and shook his head.

I also get dirty looks from men sometimes when I dog walk.

Most of the men are of a particular age group, I'd say 50+. No idea why I have this happen to me. I also get 'helpful' men always pointing things out to me, such as the case this morning and other similar incidents.

I'm old and fat so just get ignored by them. Although I did used to get told to cheer up a lot when I was younger. Bring old and fat certainly has its uses!

EvaporatedHour · 16/10/2020 12:21

Urgh yes I get the 'cheer up' thing said to me too. although not much at the moment due to mask wearing.

Maybe people thought you had a 'dirty look' on your face and so was told to cheer up. It works both ways in my opinion. Maybe you're being paranoid.

Have the dirty looks come about recently? This whole mask thing has divided opinions, so the dirty looks may be a result of people reacting to your perceived over reaction to covid.

Very odd.

I don't experience that, normally they just say to me "morning flower" or "cold/hot/windy today isn't it?" .

midlifecrash · 16/10/2020 12:30

I think it might be a thing some men do to older women. Last year I had a man try to insist I was queue jumping when I'd been standing right next to him the whole time. He wanted to bully me to go to the back. Absolutely bonkers.

LaBellina · 16/10/2020 12:31

No, usually I am the one giving creeps who stare too much, dirty looks.

But I do agree with you that men often behave in a way to women in public that wouldn't go down well if it were the other way around. I'm thinking of things like making comments, staring too much etc.

HerdyGerdy · 16/10/2020 12:33

I had a man of that age bracket tell after me that I should have drive forward out of a parking space instead of reversing. Ignore. It’s twatty behaviour

deydododatdodontdeydo · 16/10/2020 12:34

The mask guy spoke to you, that's different to a dirty look.
Maybe it's just their face?
I must admit, I see dirty looks all the time, mostly from women. Most recently for getting trolley at the supermarket, when she clearly thought I should have let her go first.

NewlyGranny · 16/10/2020 12:37

And the older men who decide you need their help backing out of a supermarket space and stand there waving their arms about! They don't do this to other men, only to women.

I usually roll the window down and say sweetly, "Thank you so much, I could never have managed that without your help!" 😉

highame · 16/10/2020 12:38

Unfortunately I'm very good at giving dirty looks, it's my stock in trade, so couldn't level it at just men. I don't even need an excuse Grin

Good mask dial have you purchased yours yet

FTMF30 · 16/10/2020 12:38

I think some people just suffer from RBF (resting bitch face). I know I do and, I guess a lot of men in your area do to. It's not a problem until you happen to make eye contact with someone.

Vermeil · 16/10/2020 12:39

I’ve become stroppier as I’ve got older. I’ve left a few ears well blistered by my ability to loudly rain down every foul insult under the sun. Often feel shitty for days afterwards because of their initial behaviour, but I will not meekly bow down to any arsehole who gives me trouble.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/10/2020 12:39

I got a filthy look from a bloke this morning because I had the audacity to be crossing the road with my children as he took a blind corner at speed and had to slam his brakes on or have to scrape us off his bonnet. Hmm

I think some blokes subconsciously believe the world is theirs and women and children are only in it on sufferance and if we keep out of their way.

But why were you standing next to him in a queue?
Vermeil · 16/10/2020 12:41

^ What on earth are you going on about?

StormyInTheNorth · 16/10/2020 12:43

This happens to me. I'm very ugly, so I assume I offend them in some way. Used to happen if the office if I dared speak to them. I'd get ignored and the dirty look.
I get the smile thing too. I got it recently from someone famous who is supposed to be a feminist. Wonder if you have to be pretty to benefit from his brand of feminism.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/10/2020 12:56

@StormyInTheNorth really want to know who it was! My first guess would be Russell brand.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/10/2020 12:57

Men are the worst. I just try to feel pleased that I’ve annoyed them.

Oh god yes

I had something similar in a supermarket when masks were first compulsory

I just missed what he said and when i realised it was too late

I’m hoping that if it happens again I’ll be quick enough to say ‘mind your own sodding business’

A driver once followed me into a carpark to tell me off...luckily for both of us that I wasn’t in a bad mood (and had a child in tow) and that he was perfectly reasonable once I explained...he was still a twat though
