Why are female hero’s always so scantily clad?!

Watching justice league Blush for the first time, and the first thing I could think of, is why is Wonder Woman and the Amazons half dressed, whilst most of the men are covered head to toe in armour.

Doesn’t make much sense with fighting does it?

I mentioned this to my dh and he laughed at me because I don’t think the same things about women in dance shows and stuff like that. Tried to explain it wasn’t the same but no Hmm

Yep, and they always wear those high wedge heeled boots. Very practical. Ugh and Black Widow’s signature move of besting a baddie by wrapping her legs round his neck and shoving her fanny in his face 😏

LaBellina · 15/10/2020 14:05

Because they are designed for the male gaze....

True...

Black widow also seems to have her hair down a lot too. Very practical

Purely because, in dance shows, the women need to have outfits on that breathable whilst being comfortable

Unfortunately, that rules out head to toe Lycra in many cases, say such as street dance.

Has anyone seen Thor?? Shock

Soubriquet · 15/10/2020 14:13

Yes Grin

Does that need to translate into clothing that is designed to reveal or pretend to reveal more than it covers? I mean, my young daughter's dance costumes sometimes had cut outs (lined with flesh coloured fabric), but still this is done for the male gaze and not for breathability. And the young girls are wearing these costumes because they have become accepted as dance/gymnastics/skating culture. And is that saying that a male dancer does not sweat more than a female because they tend to be well covered?

And it is the same with the women's beach volleyball outfits.

NannyR · 15/10/2020 14:19

I thought the same thing about some dancers last night - I was watching a YouTube video of Hugh Jackman singing "the greatest show" live at an awards ceremony. There were male and female dancers, both doing the same dance - the men were fully dressed in suits, trousers and jackets, the women had a jacket on top and fishnets and a very high cut leotard underneath. If comfort and breathability were so important, why weren't the men dressed in something equally skimpy?

boriselbow · 15/10/2020 14:23

It's for the same reasons that female crime busters (detectives/spies etc) on TV always do the same job as the men but in heels.

FFSFFSFFS · 15/10/2020 14:25

I refer you to the Daily Mail.

Why is it news that women have boobs?

Because we live in a world in which a large percentage of visual information is provided for the male gaze.

I also refer you to the ages of women and men in most action films. I don't have the stats to hand - but its normally women in their 20s with men in their 30s/40s.

SBTLove · 15/10/2020 14:26

@Winesalot
If an Olympic male gymnast can perform fully covered why are girls in a very scanty leotard, it is infuriating.
Even with pop bands, Little Mix have gradually wore less and less clothes, yet boy bands are fine in jeans and t-shirt’s.

Winesalot · 15/10/2020 14:32

SBTLove

Agreed!

There is plenty of double standards that we allow because we are conditioned from a young age to do so. Hence, my daughter and her friends wearing revealing lycra costumes for dance. 'because they are like the women's costumes' or her ice-skating gear or her friends sparkly gymnastics costume. Why can't these costumes be not low/high cut and require taping etc?

So, yes.... let the mens be exactly the same and see how comfortable they feel. complete with tape so nothing moves. They need 'comfort' too don't they?

Winesalot · 15/10/2020 14:34

Oh... and the piles of stage makeup including mascara and lip liner on 3 year olds!!!!

Soubriquet · 15/10/2020 14:35

Hmm maybe I need to reassess the dancing costumes.

I’ve danced but mine was ballroom so big dresses where required

Dd did ballet, so leotard and tulip skirt were required so the teacher could assess she was doing the leg work right

Acrobats was a leotard again, so that teacher could assess she was doing all the leg and arm work correctly with the bonus of having skin to help grip.

It’s depressing, I watched a montage video recently showing the difference between how male and female actors are interviewed. A lot of the clips were Anne Hathaway as cat woman and Scarlett Johansson in avengers getting visibly annoyed at being asked the same questions over and over again about their costumes while male counterparts were asked about the role. ‘Were they really as skin tight as they looked?’ ‘Did you have to go on a special diet?’ etc etc. Some of the interviewers were obvious sleazeballs just being pervy. It must be infuriating.

FairFriday · 15/10/2020 14:35

I’m a practical woman. I need my boobs held in and wear big knickers when having my period. So tottering around in what’s basically a swimsuit and high heeled boots is just daft. Plus I feel the cold and need pockets.

TheClitterati · 15/10/2020 14:36

Cause if they aren't sexy they don't matter. HmmConfused

Soubriquet · 15/10/2020 14:40

You always hear women say they are that used to wearing heels that flats just their feet, but still, flipping and jumping about in heels is just a broken leg waiting to happen

I once knew a woman who would wear heels anytime she was standing because her calf muscles were so stuck in that position that it was extremely painful to wear anything less. But .... how is this healthy? And why are women portrayed this way still in 2020? Because women believe it is freeing and that superheroes can do it, so women really should live up to that reality?

Winesalot · 15/10/2020 14:48

Were your ballroom dancing costumes not revealing at the top or giving the illusion of being revealing (with netting etc)?

MorvaanReed · 15/10/2020 14:51

I can't find it but there was an art tumblr called something like "women in practical armour". I loved it but I haven't used tumblr for ages. If anyone knows the one I mean and can link I'd be delighted.

Soubriquet · 15/10/2020 14:54

No actually they weren’t!

They covered my shoulders and had a normal neckline.

But I am nearly 32 and I did ballroom when I was 5-11

Antibles · 15/10/2020 14:59

Male gaze. They'd stare at naked women all day if they could. Half naked in computer games probably feels like a massive inconvenient compromise for them.
