The power of the Knitting Nannas

Just in case you've not heard of the Knitting Nannas.

I love this story, these women aren't going down without a fight in their quest to stop not quite legal logging in West Australia

"A convoy of 40 + nannas and support crew headed off from Margaret River at 2 30 AM for the slaughterhouse of WA’s Old Growth Forests. Old Growth forest being logged via a legal technicality that too few West Australians know about.
Let by the combat hardened veterans of the Knitting Nannas strike force that disrupted logging Wednesday September 9, yesterday, pre-dawn, the valiant nannas struck again.
Armed only with the Kalashnikov’s of conscience, their love of their state, their forests, and their grandchildren, our fearless nannas halted the plunder, and saved trees that had stood tall for 150 + years, from brutal chainsaw demise"

Wonderful. Never understimate the power of older women.

30, hell, even 20 years ago, I wanted to be Kim Deal. Now these women are my heroes.

"MRREC’s Peta Goodwin said she and the other six women — three of whom were older than 80 — arrived at McCorkhill at 4am armed with chairs, blankets and home-baked treats for the forestry workers. The Margaret River women blocked the road and worked on their knitting."

I think I wanted to post this to remind ourselves that we are all powerful in the small acts of protest we make.

Kirkup and Murray in the last week have played direct tribute to us as having the power to stop policy change which would impact us and our future generations of daughters and granddaughters. We should never under-estimate ourselves.

Amazing. Powerful peaceful women 💪💪💪❤️

You can tell old-growth karri forest from the vantage point of the observation platform one of the climbing trees with public access: there are bare, grey branches poking out of the canopy. Everyone knows old growth logging is happening because of the stupendous diameter of some of the logs being trucked out.

Go Nannas!
