Saira Khan - Loose Women

Some women are so brave in the face of threats and adversity. Saira, and the rest of the women, were discussing the TV drama "Honour", a true life docudrama about the murder of a young woman deemed to have 'dis-honoured' her family.

Everytime Saira raises her head above the parapet, she risks the ire of her wider community. She is very brave.

The issue of 'honour killings' has not gone away and I believe it is a good idea to support any womens services who help educate women on their Rights and to also escape.

Absolutely.

persistentwoman · 29/09/2020 12:59

Just been watching this on catch up. It's so frighteningly accurate.

persistentwoman · 29/09/2020 12:59

And yes - all credit to Saira and all the courageous women standing up to this.

RobertaTheGreat · 29/09/2020 13:01

I do wish the term 'honour killing' were banned. It's murder pure and simple.

PurpleHoodie · 29/09/2020 13:04

Roberta Yes. It needs to be named as it is.

'Sister murder'
'Mother murder' etc

Totally agree.

Well done, Saira.

NicholasTopliss · 29/09/2020 14:31

I agree, and it should be treated by all as murder, not tiptoed around as culture or tradition. It has been going on for generations here and it has to stop. Murder is a crime that should carry a life sentence.

PearPickingPorky · 29/09/2020 14:38

I agree OP.

I wonder, if misogyny becomes a hate crime then rather than the murder conviction and sentence being mitigated by the suggestion it's an "honour killing", could the misogyny hate crime laws be used to make it an aggravating factor?

wellbehavedwomen · 29/09/2020 14:43

I hope so. If a murder is based on misogyny - and the idea you own a woman, and that her behaviour reflects on you accordingly, especially around women's choices in terms of gendered expectations (and above all around reproductive and sexual potential) then it's the most misogynist motive possible - then that should absolutely fall under any hate crime definition.

I agree the name needs to be changed. It's like 'child porn,' which as a term throws a veil over the real horror of child sexual torture. It's not 'an honour killing' - it's a misogynist murder. Allowing the word 'honour' anywhere near the crime allows a hatefuelled form of crime to be framed and named by the perpetrators.

vesuvia · 29/09/2020 17:16

OP thanks for posting this thread. I was not aware, until now, of this two-part drama highlighting this appalling misogynist crime.

I’ve not watched it and I ever new that phrase “honour killing” before watching loose women today. I will have to watch the documentary it sounds interesting.

DaisiesandButtercups · 29/09/2020 17:29

Gynecide?

Matricide

Soricide?

Misogynistic murder

Honour killing doesn’t clearly convey the fact that it is men killing women in order to terrorise other women into obedience and submission.

I wish I could like this x100.

A police officer on a programme about one of these cases once said they should be called 'control killings' not honour killings because they are all about controlling the women and there is no honour about that.

It's always stuck in my mind.

OvaHere · 29/09/2020 23:09

Agree the concept of 'honour killings' is incredibly unhelpful and victim blamey. It conceals what is actually happening, why and by who.

PurpleHoodie · 30/09/2020 17:09

"Control killings".

Chilling, but quite correct a descriptor.
