AIMS Ireland use Pregnant People, use TERF slur

My poor friend who AIMS helped greatly has just been on to me, really upset. AIMS are a voluntary organisation fighting for better maternity care in Ireland. They have changed their language to erase women, and use “pregnant people”. Apparently they still use women and girls the odd time. Check out their Twitter reply to those criticising their decision:

“Yes. We block. When your sole focus is to undermine the rights of others, while ignoring the very real injustices in the Irish maternity system, you have no place here. #antichoice #terfs”

In 1415 Jan Hus, a religious reformer, was burned at the stake as a heretic by the Catholic Church. An apocryphal story about him always comes to my mind when I am trying to argue about these issues with the woke feminists (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Hus):

"Anecdotally, it has been claimed that the executioners had trouble intensifying the fire. An old woman then came to the stake and threw a relatively small amount of brushwood on it. Upon seeing her act, a suffering Hus then exclaimed, "O Sancta Simplicitas!".

The phrase's Czech equivalent, "Svatá prostota!" (vocative form: "Svatá prostoto!", Translated "Holy simplicity!") is still used today when commenting on a person's foolish action coming from the belief that he or she is doing something righteous."

You need the media. Only one newspaper to start the ball rolling.

I'd write a personal letter to all the editors pointing out that an article that is well written about this subject would draw in new readers. The evidence is here. I'd also give names of some who might write a really good article.

It might be good to point out that democracy only functions well if the media reports in an informed and wide reaching way.

I'd give that a shot, regardless of how captured they are, they are businesses

Since when did GCN become the TCN and why is protesting the erasure of women twisted to become transphobic?

gcn.ie/aims-ireland-transphobic-comments-public-support/

The article references Tweets by the transwoman who said all terfs need to be terrified and smashed.

AIMS have lost the plot.

That article reminds me of a thread hear some weeks back. It was about a Facebook page from a body shop store, I think in Scotland. The staff of the shop were traumatised by trans phobic attacks. Cue loads of "are you OK, hun" posts.
The "attack" was an *I ❤️JKR" sticker.

GCN were never going to be unbiased in their reporting.on this issue. AIMS on the other hand, lose a lot of credibility, when a group that supports women, refuse to condemn those tweets.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 30/09/2020 11:14

I'm in Ireland, although not Irish. I've had careful conversations with my fellow mums at the school gate/over coffee - they are, to a fault, women who would jump to help if you needed it, absolutely lovely women, I really fell on my feet when I moved here. They are also having no truck with sterilising children, and are well aware of Irelands historical, and current, treatment of women, and I have absolutely no doubt would be straight down the school if anything untoward was suggested as being taught (i've checked our PSHE lessons, and they're very age appropriate and fair)

I think that the thing I found a bit of a jolt was last year, when they lit up one of the stadiums with rainbows - and the homophobic vitriol tweeted about it showed that for all the surface level progressiveness, Ireland still has a lot more work to do.

GCN has had a very nasty PinkNews-ish streak lately.
SecondRow · 30/09/2020 11:41

I'd search for how many times GCN previously admired the sterling work of AIMS, but I can't be bothered.

SecondRow · 30/09/2020 11:43

I suppose the writer who compiled those he-said, she-said tweets into an "article" with a human rights slant is the same Bristol Uni academic who's an expert in trans human rights law.

Aine82 · 30/09/2020 12:26

“GCN has had a very nasty PinkNews-ish streak lately.”

It really has. Where are the amazing, strong lesbian feminist contributors? Looking at their website the only lesbian item is buried at the end of the page and it’s about Ellen De Generes.

They have no female staff to write an article about AIMS? No transmen they could cite about inclusivity in maternity services? No, 1 tweet from an AIMS user, one brief tweet from Izzy (love her) and the rest given over to the menz.

That should say God love her, not love her!!! (She was recently attacked by far righter scumbags and got a nasty head wound). I had great respect for her until earlier this year she condoned the threats of violence from transwomen and indeed blamed “terfs” for (“Sadly, with a flock of vultures constantly waiting for a trans woman to say something, anything, they can twist into a threat of violence, ... played right into their claws…”). Anyway, back on topic.

Ah, thanks for that Aine, I was just wondering whether to wade in on Izzy's twitter so the background is helpful, I didn't know she'd already pronounced a verdict on terfs!

Runnersos · 30/09/2020 14:19

If a person obtains a GRC after the birth of a child they remain either the father or mother.

This is from the 2015 Act

  1. The fact that a gender recognition certificate is issued to a person shall not affect the status of the person as the father or mother of a child born prior to the date of the issue of the certificate.

Can anyone tell me what happens if a person with a GRC has a child after changing gender. For example is a trans man recorded as the mother?
Or are birth certs going to use the term birthing person?
This is a genuine question.

Roomba · 30/09/2020 14:32

I can't answer re Ireland, but in the UK a trans man who gives birth is still referred to as the Mother on birth certificates. Freddie McConnell (who works for The Guardian) had a baby (and made a film about it). Freddie brought a court case to be allowed to be the legal Father of the child on the birth cert. Freddie lost the case, and the subsequent appeal IIRC.

She has denounced and harassed 't*rfs' over and over again. One of the other beautiful woman-hating pieces in GCN this year was a piece written by Izzy inciting hatred for a woman who had - gasp - noticed and called out the abusive, violent language towards women who... care about women's rights.

She's quite horrible. (Obviously, though, that attack from the anti-mask loons was appalling and not something you'd wish on anyone.)

Abhannmor · 30/09/2020 17:36

Very perceptive comment. We are desperate to be seen as a poster boy for liberal capitalism now - as Amber from Chapo Trap House spotted a while ago. This state has relied upon the Catholic Church - with all its failings - to plug holes in the social welfare system for decades. Now it is in decline , to be replaced not by social democracy but possessive individualism with a patina of ' inclusivity' .

SecondRow · 01/10/2020 08:17

Well, Izzy can be added to the growing list of Irish people who've agreed they don't "personally" have a problem with the word woman. I mean, how mad would that look? Halo So that's nice.

Now the same list of people does still seem to have a problem with women asking for the word to be actually used, but we can't have everything!

So Izzy personally doesn't have a problem with the word women, but those that actually want it used are TERFs presumably. So if TENI and Izzy have given permission for the word woman to be used will AIMS and the HSE listen to the people who matter? And we know who they are 🤔
SecondRow · 01/10/2020 09:15

It's a bit embarrassing for Izzy actually, she's there right up to last night fighting away on the point TENI conceded this day two weeks ago... maybe she missed the memo.

Imagine if there were TWO trans lobbied in Ireland, one cool with the word women and the other not... they'll never get anything done at this rate Wink
