My daughter who is part of an LGBT group at school and has a lot of weird ideas about gender and 'queer' has introduced me to 'Cottagecore'.
I've just watched this and have a lot of thoughts and feel a bit disquieted about some of it, but at the moment I can't really get it straight beyond 'why does an appreciation of Holly Hobby have to be seen as a political fucking act, and why does everything have to be appropriated by LGBT?'
If you can be arsed I'd love to hear what more intelligent people make of it. Thanks.

I haven’t time to watch it yet but the only time I’ve come across cottagecore is on insta because I follow lots of vintage clothing sellers and it’s a “look” (floral, whimsical, not my cup of tea). I have no idea what that has to do with LGBT any more than liking 80s power dressing, or 70s disco wear or 90s rave garb would be. I will watch to find out.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/09/2020 18:03

Also it generally seems to be middle class mums (not saying that as an insult) that love it 🤷‍♀️

Juniperandrage · 25/09/2020 18:05

I don't have time to watch this vid, but I'm quite intrigued by cottagecore and look it up every so often. I hadn't clicked that it was AT ALL "queer." in fact I think it's more likely to dog whistle oppressive "traditional" values

Terrace58 · 25/09/2020 18:05

No time for videos. I thought it was only a decorating style in Animal Crossing.

haba · 25/09/2020 18:06

I've seen it on Pinterest clothes images- not LGBT that I can see, just cosy little house on the prairie type clothes (like the Japanese nature girl thing, bit I can't remember the proper name, momogirl??)

But yes, as juniper says oppressive of girls, expecting them to be homemaker types, in a GOP way.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/09/2020 18:11

According to the wiki page about it blackberry picking is cis and hetero coded, which is exactly how I saw it as a kid.

Suffrajester · 25/09/2020 18:16

Surely it's only gay if you share your cottage with a partner of the same sex? Which is a thing, there are and have been "women's land" projects, villages and communes where lesbian and bisexual women have lived and worked together homesteading, though they've included straight women if their Nigels stayed off the land somewhere else. I don't know what's inherently gay about it, unless she's got the wrong idea about "cottaging" and someone didn't have the heart to tell her what it means...

12frogsincoats · 25/09/2020 18:21

Cottagecore is a style/aesthetic.

Please can you explain what you mean by 'why does everything have to be appropriated by LGBT?'

haba · 25/09/2020 18:27

"Blackberry picking is cis?"

I've heard it all now Hmm

She touches on this - a 'tradwives' thing apparently - but that's definitely not what she's talking about or taking from the scene.

I had the exact same thought about cottaging!

Wow that video (although I only made it halfway through) has made me feel old. Isn’t it just having hobbies/liking certain things? I love a bit of cross stitch and walking in the woods but don’t identify as cottage-core. Is there any need to? I get punks/goths etc being a ‘label’ but not this. I don’t know enough to comment on the gay aspect referred to. Just a bit glad my teen years were spent in parks and pubs and not on the internet.

SunshineOutdoors · 25/09/2020 18:44

Sorry just noticed you’re asking for more intelligent comment. That’s plainly not me! So please ignore my comment. Following with interest though...

OvaHere · 25/09/2020 18:45

I saw cottagecore mentioned somewhere else with reference to being 'queer'. I have to confess I thought it had a totally different meaning and didn't look into it any further.

I'm slightly bemused now!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so homophobic. That was poor phrasing. In the video she talks about being 'queer' which is a phrase I really struggle with for lots of reasons, and describes this as a sort of movement, much more than an aesthetic but a sort of outlook, a fantasy, wrapped up in some vaguely political thinking. It's all a bit odd. When I said why does everything have to be appropriated by LGBT I was thinking about my daughter who sees gay messaging in everything. It's like it's not just who she is, she needs to see affirmation all around her. Everything she watches or reads has to have a gay subtext. I find that a little odd and it's not how any of my gay friends live their lives. The girl in the video seems to be of the same persuasion, some revisionist history going on around her analysis of subcultures and a need for this idea (which most people would recognise as just Country Life magazine) to be representative of a subversion of dominant hetero and capitalist and white ideals. It unsettles me that she's taking something so banal and claiming it as a movement and I was looking for help to understand why.

No I felt the exact same but was struggling to get my head round it and all the ideas it touched on and why I found it unsettling. I lived a vaguely rural life but it wasn't anything like this unrealistic and idealised view.

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2020 19:00

I hate these school LGBT clubs, they ferment bad ideas.

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2020 19:02

Also, you can 'queer' literally anything as Lindsey and Pluckrose have proved. Nothing to do with L G or B though.

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2020 19:03

I never think of criticising LGBT as homophobic, quite the opposite. The movement is homophobic.

nevermorelenore · 25/09/2020 19:23

@haba

There are often blackberry pickers outside my house. I will see if I can strike up a conversation about their gender identity.

I had heard of cottagecore but thought it was just another revival of the chintzy, cath kidston type shit. Had no idea it went beyond wearing those voluminous floral dresses.

RadandMad · 25/09/2020 19:35

It's just picking fucking blackberries.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/09/2020 19:54

I’m not sure this makes sense to me in any way.

I understand suffering from homophobic bullying in small or rural towns (as anywhere) but I can’t make the leap to creating a fantasy childhood that probably didn’t exist at the time anyway, but I suppose it’s harmless and if that’s your thing fine, but it makes you sound a bit twattish 🤷‍♀️
