Women's Aid consultation on single sex service provision

NB This was published before the GRA response was made public.

" ... Women’s Aid has recently written to our membership regarding the provision of single sex services for survivors of domestic abuse. The debate about who should have access to single sex services has evolved over the last couple of years and has become extremely polarised. As a federation that represents member organisations all over the country, we know that this is an issue that can be divisive between organisations and the staff working within them. ... "

Another NB This is for WAFE members, and I am not posting this to encourage individuals to write to them! Can only hope that those at the coal face of DV provision still failing the founding aims of WA.

ie " ... a consultant to ensure that any further statements or practice guidance we develop is informed by the views and current challenges of our members, as well as survivors and other stakeholders. ... "

But they have now published a response to Liz Truss' statement:

" ... As a domestic abuse charity for women and children, Women’s Aid have long advocated for the provision of women-only spaces. This is informed by evidence that specialist services by and for women, and those for Black and minoritised women, deaf and disabled women, and LGBT communities are vital to safety, recovery and empowerment. We also know that trans people face significant barriers in accessing safety and support for their experiences of domestic abuse. All victims and survivors of abuse should be able to access their fundamental rights to safety, dignity and support. ... "

I think some of what they have written is a bit fence sitting, but I think they are the largest women's service provider to have actually made a public statement indicating that it has been an issue not having a clear statement (until Liz Truss) about the right of service providers to offer single sex services.

Much better that this is out in the open that individual refuges being subject to pressure from local council funding and trans activists - or stray Management Committee Members who insist even though they have only been in post for a couple of days know better than the women actually actually working with DV survivors day after day.

They should be single sex. DV survivor.

Hi BlackeyedSusan - hope things are better for you now.

And I certainly hope that the consultation process will be open to women who have used refuge services because in the end they are THE ones it is all about.

well, I work in this sector and have heard nothing of this consultation

Siablue · 23/09/2020 18:18

Is there any way that current services users can have any input? I am currently receiving support from Women’s Aid.

This is informed by evidence that specialist services by and for women, and those for Black and minoritised women, deaf and disabled women, and LGBT communities are vital to safety, recovery and empowerment.

I read that as suggesting separate specialist services. Southall Black Sisters won a very important case against Ealing Council in 2008 which established that specialist services for specific groups are lawful:

Well I do hope this press release actually translate into an actual consultation. It says:

" ... Women’s Aid has recently written to our membership regarding the provision of single sex services for survivors of domestic abuse. ... " But they also go on to say they are working with a consultant. So maybe it will be a little while till the consultation process is agreed.

But (and I am not part of the sector) nothing to stop those working for DV services and those receiving DV support services cant ask how to be involved in the consultation.

Also, it has always been the aim of Women's Aid to have appropriate services, ie that the service provision should come from those who are part of the community being supported.

Unfortunately massive cuts from both local and central Government have been most severe on specialist services. So it is whether this aim and the SBS court case can be translated into money to help this happen.

Which brings us back to why, given the money that must have been spent on trans activism campaigning, it wasn't spent on setting up service for trans DV victims? Seems that some were more interested in undermining women's services than setting up their own.

Yes. I believe stonewall have a few quid.

This is really the crux of the matter. Gay people in need of support often want their own spaces, and historically have created them. Trans women demand access to women's spaces.

ArabellaScott · 23/09/2020 20:22

Sounds like a positive step forward. I think there's a huge need for more research, more questions, more consultations, more data, on all of these issues surrounding single sex spaces.

LangClegsInSpace · 23/09/2020 20:33

Stonewall have over £4M held in reserves and their most recent annual turnover was over £9M. They spend every penny on lobbying and propaganda.
