Brilliant article in the critic about JK Rowling

This is by Nick Cohen who you might remember posted about reading Troubled Blood on the day it came out.

I think it is brilliant and he looks at eugenics and how it particularly targets disabled women and girls.

Excellent article.

FFSFFSFFS · 23/09/2020 13:35

It's a good article.

I was thinking about her the other day in comparison to Cate Blanchett. Who I think also most likely has a strong moral centre. However, she very clearly keeps clear of any possibly controversial statements.

I have so much respect for JKR. If she was a man she would be worshipped across the board.

queenofknives · 23/09/2020 13:36

That is a really brilliant article which outlines some of the many reasons why JK is such an exceptional writer and human being. Thanks for sharing this.

RoyalCorgi · 23/09/2020 13:46

That is really good. I have been waiting for a very long time for Nick Cohen to write about this debate and it looks as if he's finally decided to go for it. Good for him. It's really great as well to see someone giving JKR credit for being such a good writer (people are very snobbish about her) and for being such a good human being.

Collidascope · 23/09/2020 13:48

Great article, thank you for sharing.

KatVonlabonk · 23/09/2020 14:01

Quite brilliant

RHTawneyonabus · 23/09/2020 14:20

That was really excellent. It’s that resistance to the oversimplification of stuff and the refusal to separate the world in to ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’ I admire. Also in the book Polworth is a very decent man who goes way above and beyond to help a friend and is an ardent Cornish Nationalist. She uses that to explore the oddities around the idea that being born in one particular place somehow makes you special.

jhuizinga · 23/09/2020 14:21

Thanks Siablu. It's a very good article. It came up on my Google alerts (Google obviously knows what I'm interested in). I was going to try and post a link but have no idea how to, so am pleased to see that you have!

notyourhandmaid · 23/09/2020 15:51

Thank you for sharing that link - such a good article.

GoodyWoolf · 23/09/2020 16:13

That was excellent thanks for sharing.

Jamclag · 23/09/2020 16:43

Brilliant article.

It really highlights how Rowling has never taken the easy path when what is right is at stake.

I used to think having huge wealth freed people to make their own choices and stick to their principles however unpopular - a privilege that most of us can't afford - but after watching numerous wealthy and successful people bury their heads or capitulate under pressure I think it really does take a special type of person to do what is right rather than what is easy. Thanks to Nick Cohen for highlighting the many ways Rowling has spoken up when others have remained silent -- just more evidence of her intelligence and integrity.

PearPickingPorky · 23/09/2020 16:45

It's a long, and really, really good, read.

napody · 23/09/2020 16:53

Goosebumps. Great job.

heathspeedwell · 23/09/2020 16:56

That's superb, thanks Siablue! Going to share that far and wide.

WisestIsShe · 23/09/2020 17:20

Such a good article it persuaded me to subscribe. 3 issues for £5!

persistentwoman · 23/09/2020 17:27

There's some really good and powerful writing about these issues around at the moment but this is exceptional. I've just started Troubled Blood and he's already given me another filter to look at it through.
Thank you Nick Cohen. Flowers

nepeta · 23/09/2020 20:22

That was good. Cohen brings back some of the layers of complexity that exist in the real world. The absence of that complexity in the woke world is why the attacks on JKR are so tiresome and cult-like. I have rarely seen a criticism of what she tweeted and wrote on her site which would demonstrate that the critic had read everything and had also thought about it. This makes responding to the criticisms exhausting as it requires also first reproducing what JKR actually wrote.

ReiltinDubh · 23/09/2020 21:40

This popped up in my Google feed also - it was a great read and I've bookmarked it to share. I had a shiver go up my spine reading it. JKR is such an inspiration

Delphinium20 · 23/09/2020 21:42

Excellent article! Reading why people were angry at JKR and then going to the hard work of reading everything she said (which I could find absolutely nothing wrong with) was something that sent me over the edge in realising the damage and insanity of cancel culture and the mob.

Thecazelets · 23/09/2020 21:52

Thanks for posting that. I so wish my teenage dd would read it. JKR is currently top of the list of things we can't talk about, as she and her friends have all drunk the TRA kool-aid in distilled instagrammable form.

Carriemac · 24/09/2020 12:23

He is so insightful

Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 17:09

I think I'm a bit in love with Nick Cohen. I thought this essay was fantastic. Really excellent.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 27/09/2020 15:19

I finally read this today and just wanted to add my praise. Brilliant article, really worth reading.

TheQuietWoman · 27/09/2020 15:37

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson should be begging for her forgiveness.

stumbledin · 28/09/2020 00:22

Very suprised by this as I normally wouldn't bother with anything he wrote.

But this article does more than just go through the attacks on JKR but talks about what she has done, is doing with her writing.

And about the importance of having a principled position.

I wonder how widely it will be read.
