Just seen on the local news - The a Glass Ceiling - a feminist magazine just launched by three young women.
I have skimmed for now - the print is a bit small for my eyes on my phone but it looks interesting- I wish them all the best.

I haven’t picked up a ‘feminist’ magazine since Spare Rib!

I used to buy it (and others) in an arts centre and bookshop in Glasgow when I was a student. I doubt they’d stock anything like that these days, the way things are.

SerenityNowwwww · 18/09/2020 07:56

Slim pickings as my mum would say. I didn’t really get a ‘feel’ for them. Is it American or U.K. based? I’m not certain ‘young women’ these days would give a monkeys about an old giffer like me, or value the opinions of older feminists.

But you never know - I’m very very sceptical of anything with a ‘feminist’ or even ‘woman’ label on it these days!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2020 08:18

I tried to look at it, but the website is over complicated and doesn't seem to work well on an iPad.

JaneAustenWouldHateThis · 18/09/2020 08:22

Do they know what a woman is?

(I can remember getting all excited about the WEP)

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 18/09/2020 08:24

I had a quick flip through. I think it could be good.

BrassicaRabbit · 18/09/2020 11:01

I'm at the point where, if they know what a woman is, I'd probably buy it even if it was shite!!

That Guardian ££ gotta go somewhere!

SerenityNowwwww · 18/09/2020 11:06

I will watch with interest...

BlackForestCake · 18/09/2020 14:08

Just a random thought: if you smash a glass ceiling you’ll get thousands of shards of glass in your face.

Overly literal musings aside, I wish them well. Is there a physical edition?

TeddyDahlia · 18/09/2020 14:13

It looks promising - I got the feel it’s mainly aimed at teenagers / early twenties but I only had a skim read so that impression may be wrong.

Escapeplanning · 18/09/2020 14:18

I read a piece about farming which was fairly ok despite the pigeon holing of country people as "conservative" versus liberal humanities grads such as the writer. Then right at the end she moans about how biological male/female farming is and the lack of other identities.

Don't bother.

Ha ha, I wonder if that's because farmers don't worry overmuch about the gender identities of the animals they're breeding.
gardenbird48 · 18/09/2020 14:28

they had a nice interview on the local news (deepest darkest South West UK) and seem to be quite young and enthusiastic. I wish them the best of luck and hope they are able to hang on to their aims and feminism.

And if there is a trapdoor and you get in, everyone can see your knickers...
JaneAustenWouldHateThis · 18/09/2020 14:38

I can't find anything about this magazine on the internet. Who are the "three women" who have set this up?

Anyone?

FeedTheSparrows · 18/09/2020 15:16

Teeny tiny website set up for phones. Too small for me to be bothered to strain my eyes on it.

I would love to produce an actual feminist mag - in print - but it would cost so much that I doubt if even if women subscribed it could pay for itself.

wellbehavedwomen · 20/09/2020 12:44

It's great that they are making the initiative. I agree it needs work, but it's heartening to see the aims and effort. Good for them.

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 21/09/2020 13:16

Because it's very important that we only exploit the cows that identify as exploitable, didn't you know?

Personally I think it's dreadfully bigoted not to let those bulls that identify as exploitable milk-producers be included in the milking process. As a progressive forward-thinking society we really need to ensure that we're being inclusive and extracting something to go on your cereal from all cattle regardless of their sex.

Just when you thought WBH couldn't get any worse...

JaneAustenWouldHateThis · 21/09/2020 13:25

Great post Tyro

But what is WBH?

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 21/09/2020 14:03

WBH = weetabix horror. Much like pom bears, naice ham, and penis beaker, you probably had to be there.

MeridaTheBold · 21/09/2020 14:09

I'm pretty sure you could persuade some people to spend a day trying to do that. 'If you just believe hard enough, you can milk this animal of undeclared gender identity bull '. Grin

CaraDuneRedux · 21/09/2020 14:16

Then right at the end she moans about how biological male/female farming is and the lack of other identities.

In fairness to her (I think the stuff about other identities is bollocks) what I think she's actually trying to say is that because, for obvious reasons, the biological male/female distinction matters massively to farmers when they deal with their livestock, they then unthinkingly project that distinction onto human interactions in a way that reinforces gender (in the sense of sexist stereotypes) unnecessarily.

That it's a short step from "Need to keep that male calf intact because it's from a prime pedigree bull and I can use it for future breeding purposes; can castrate those and raise for beef; those are clearly females, so milking parlour/breeding more beef cattle here we come" to "That's the order of nature, so I should be making the business decisions on the farm and my wife should be making the jam." (Incidentally I personally do not think that's how farmers think at all - in my admittedly limited experience, many husband-wife farming couples seem to have pretty equal partnerships.)

WinterIsGone · 21/09/2020 14:40

Yes, it does seem to be written by and aimed at young women. Good for them. I hope it does well.

As a middle-aged harridan, I'd love to read an in-depth feminist magazine that critically investigates issues, with plenty of facts and figures.

I would love to produce an actual feminist mag - in print - but it would cost so much that I doubt if even if women subscribed it could pay for itself.
I would subscribe, but I doubt it would attract any ads, it might be difficult to make a profit. Smile
