JKR personal safety

Having read some of the rabid rantings of the TRAs on Twitter, along with THAT vile hashtag, I actually feel fearful for JK Rowling's safety. They really are unhinged. I truly hope she has some shit hot security and protection, and hate that she needs it.

OP posts:
ArabellaScott · 15/09/2020 22:55

It's probably not one brief mention in a novel that is making anyone look unhinged/violent/threatening. Probably more the constant deluge of violent and abusive death threats?

KatVonlabonk · 15/09/2020 22:55

I once got threatened with being raped with a cactus on twitter, for, wait for it, not knowing any adults that wear kids hair grips.

Its a cess pit of idiot f*ckwits

The vile misogyny shown towards JK Rowling is awful and I hope she's OK.

littlbrowndog · 15/09/2020 22:56

Oh no might be wrong or not 😂

DidoAtTheLido · 15/09/2020 23:01

And yet again Twitter allow this shit.

AbsintheFriends · 15/09/2020 23:07

I could cry for her, I really could. Such a tsunami of hate from all quarters. Even apparently rational women I have previously thought of as friends and colleagues are calling her 'vile' and 'disgusting' for her cruelty to a 'vulnerable minority group'. Trial without jury (and without a shred of actual evidence.) There's no way it won't affect her.

I remember where I was when I looked at twitter on my phone just before Christmas and saw that she had finally spoken out, and how excited and grateful I was. I thought it might really help ordinary people see sense. The only thing it's helped is for me to see which people in my contacts list I'll quietly be dropping. This, more than anything, has made me feel society is utterly fucked.

JamieLeeCurtains · 15/09/2020 23:11

Twitter is a shitpit.

CoolYourBeansMySon · 15/09/2020 23:30

Fortunately even my most woke friend on FB has kept quiet other than a brief FU when her comments first came out. The one reply was from someone asking if JK had said TWANW, she had a bit of a rant about "vile" and "transphobe". Nothing else. No other comments on her post, no comments since. And she has a lot of woke friends. Nothing from any of my other friends about anything trans, even from my few lesbian and gay friends. I do think this is all keyboard warriors now. I would imagine that she is safe and resolute, I just wish she had more public support other than the lovely Robbie.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 15/09/2020 23:49

@FlamingoAndJohn oh I remember that book, really disturbing - I never read any more by Val after that as I was too scared!

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/09/2020 00:29

I'm hoping her legal team track down as many people who have threatened her as they can.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 16/09/2020 00:34

These daft people abusing & threatening JKR & calling her a bigot, well cant they see that they are actually describing themselves.
They must be deranged.

MoltenLasagne · 16/09/2020 01:04

The problem with these idiots is the majority just egg each other on and think its all bravado and bluster, but it only takes one person to be bigged up by all that crap to decide to be a martyr. There's been a clear pattern of escalation and logic is hardly their strong point, I only wish I had others' confidence that they're all going to restrict their threats to twitter.

Yeah remember Tara Wolf and "Cathy Brennan".
KatVonlabonk · 16/09/2020 07:06

"Yeah remember Tara Wolf and "Cathy Brennan"

Clearly unhinged people. And I don't doubt there's more where they came from.

TweeBree · 16/09/2020 07:23

She's had to hire personal security for years due to paparazzi and harry potter crazies:

I was talking to an 11 year old this week, who is a big Harry Potter and JKR fan. She told me that her friend said she couldn't like HP any more because JKR had said mean things about transpeople! She was quite upset about this.

I reassured that it was fine to like HP, and that JKR had been defending women not attacking transpeople.

But it was very sad to literally hear it from the 'mouths of babes' - from playground chatter.

I've just started a separate thread but I'll put this here too

One thing I've noticed on Twitter is that when you click on many/the vast majority of those posting most offensively with death threats and abusive language etc. against women, they are bots.

There seems to be someone/some entity currently investing a lot of resources in trying to foment a culture war.

So unpleasant though the threats to JK Rowling are, I suspect the vast majority are not actually real people with (mad) opinions at all.

I get you only need one nutter, but hopefully her security is up to this.

AnotherLass · 17/09/2020 00:47

How do you know that they're bots?

FortunaMajor · 17/09/2020 01:07

She had new security gates put on her home a few months ago not long after the Maya support tweet. It was in the press at the time. She was obviously anticipating a problem.

If you look at most of the trending # on Twitter, the majority of accounts posting to it are all faceless or bots. I don't take social media seriously anymore after a journalist friend of mine showed me how bots started attacking her on twitter after she interviewed a politician. I started to see how easily it is to be manipulated.
RoyalCorgi · 17/09/2020 16:55

Can someone explain bots to me? How do they work exactly?

ArabellaScott · 17/09/2020 17:11

Benjamin Bot-on.

I didn't realise he worked for pink news. Alle ist klaar

AnotherLass · 17/09/2020 17:28

I don't get how this bot thing works, but I know that you can buy likes and retweets easily (just google it), so the bought ones must be coming from bots.

I looked at who had liked this one, which someone posted on another thread twitter.com/therealjdripper/status/1305951603531210752?s=20

A number of the likes are from accounts with less than 50 followers who mostly retweet, or when they don't it's to post tweets that say things like "aw motherfucker" that I imagine a computer could write easily enough. So I guess that they could be bots. But some are also from accounts that look like real humans to me - a computer is presumably not able to engage in real conversation.

However, as I said, I don't get how it works and how you can be sure who is real and who is a computer.

TorkTorkBam · 17/09/2020 17:29

How Twitter bots work:
I particularly like this lecture description. Nice to see a female presenting a techie subject.

A recent example of the negative impact of bots: www.businessinsider.com/trolls-bots-flooding-social-media-with-anti-quarantine-disinformation-2020-4

I like this more general description too, if the coding in the first one scared you off:
Social Bots: how do social bots work?

Just purchased hard back of her book from local one man band book shop feeling smug 😁
