Fascinating article on the parallels between lobotomy and childhood transition

“Lobotomy was often described as the “Surgery for the Soul,” with proponents claiming that only surgery, and not psychological intervention, could treat the mental illness.”

“Gender affirmation” surgeons insist the only way to treat gender dysphoria is by removing organs.”

“ True believers of both procedures dismiss the critics as ignorant or simply unenlightened. The crusade continues, and “education” and promotion forge ahead.”

It makes for grim reading. I suspect there’s a rich field of research in the future, looking at medicine in the context of social contagion.

Will read later. Thank you posting.

Grim reading indeed - thousands of girls being affected and who knows how many will regret it - the medics involved certainly don’t seem to.

In this note - can anyone recommend a good straightforward article to pass onto someone who needs to take a professional interest in the situation for girls and the end result of social transitioning please?

I listened to a radio programme about lobotomy and how it was promoted with almost religious zeal and thought of the parallel with gender affirmation, scary.

Thanks for sharing this. I have been thinking for some time that gender reassignment for very young people was equivalent to the horrific "icepick lobotomies" of the bad old days. We are doing such a disservice to these young people.

My grandmother was diagnosed as mentally unwell as a late teenager and in adulthood dx as a manic depressive, now known as bipolar disorder. Talking to relatives over the years about her and their youth and what she was like growing up it's very clear she was autistic. Her brother displayed similar traits but was branded odd. My grandmother was on various medical treatments all her life, including ECT. I'd be confident in thinking lobotomy was probably discussed if not recommended to her family.
She was quite progressive, didn't marry, had her children, quite often stood up to the church ( in 1940s Ireland ). Rode around on a motorbike, wore trousers and kept her hair very short. Nowadays she would be influenced to think her body was wrong and she could magically snap her fingers and become a boy.
