I'm dyslexic and not overly confident in articulating myself in the written form.
My sons schooo policy here clearly omits sex as a protected characteristic-how can I politely and Jon combatively pull there attention to it-everything I'm writing so far just seems so aggy or pompous

Schools equal opportunities policy

Here is what I wrote
Whilst perusing your website, specifically your Equality Policy
I noticed that there was a lack of reference to the protected characteristic of sex. The protected characteristics as set out in The Equality Act 2010 are
age;
disability;
gender reassignment;
marriage and civil partnership;
Pregnancy and maternity;
race;
religion or belief;
sex;
sexual orientation.
www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/part/2/chapter/1

I hope this can be swiftly rectified.
Thank in advance of your cooperation in this matter.

EyesOpening · 07/09/2020 16:34

*The Equality Act 2010 you mention

impossibletoday · 07/09/2020 16:43

Maybe also ask them how they define gender variant.

DianasLasso · 07/09/2020 16:49

Keep it short, fact based and non combative.

"I'm really pleased to see that XYZ school is taking equal opportunities seriously. Unfortunately there's an error in your list of 'protected characteristics' under the Equalities Act 2010 - you've missed the protected characteristic of 'sex' off your list.

I'm sure, given the importance of this (girls being under-represented in STEM subjects; boys underperforming in exams) you will want to correct this as soon as possible."

Tbh, i wouldn't say this. You don't need to justify it. Plus it sounds a bit passive aggressive. Just refer to the law.

I'd go for something more like EyesOpening has suggested.

just this moment done mine after seeing a prompt on twitter.
in ours, its a comment box rather than email- so ...brevity.
i put- hello, i was reading your equality policy "quote"
For some reason 'sex' has been omitted which is a misrepresentation of equality legislation. be great to see that amended.

good luck. i bet mine will ignore me! :)

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2020 17:23

They've got sex in section e on admissions. Confused

Helmetbymidnight · 07/09/2020 17:27

yes, mines a "single-sex" school 😂

Helmetbymidnight · 07/09/2020 17:30

ah i see what you mean now! yes the ops one is all over the place. that is confusing.

Thanks. I was wondering if I’d been too curt but I have had success so far from all who have replied to me
Helmetbymidnight · 07/09/2020 17:55

how quickly did they reply, eyes?

EyesOpening · 07/09/2020 18:01

@Helmetbymidnight

how quickly did they reply, eyes?
From half an hour to 5 working days but I haven’t had replies to all yet, I’ll give them 10 working days before I chase them up

There have been quite a few threads about this recently. Seems that someone have been briefing schools wrongly.

Some useful info to follow on the most recent thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4006198-School-Equalities-policy-gender-instead-of-sex

On that I posted:

The main point is they are incorrectly stating what the law is.

There is no protected characteristic of gender. It is Sex. They are not complying with the law.

It is on the Government web site.

You can be polite and just let them know there seems to be an error.

This is the link they need to look at www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/4

Hi OP. Where do you find this information. For a school? Can you please guide me the section under which they usually store this information? Thanks!

Helmetbymidnight · 08/09/2020 12:25

equality policy or equality duty?

thanks eyes, i dont expect to hear anything ever!

search for policies/policy and then you have to sift through to find a heading where it might be but you're looking for equality/inclusion/diversity or such
