Lecturer pretends to be POC - relation to gender theory

You might have seen this story in which a lecturer has apologised for misleading people to believe she is black

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/white-professor-lied-black-race-jessica-krug-a9704241.html

There's a story like this every couple years.

I wonder what the difference is between people saying they identify as a different ethnicity and a different gender/sex.

Thoughts?

I find this interesting too, I've never seen a convincing argument for how this is any different to people being transgender.

This is a few years old but good I thought:

Apparently a certain high profile LGBTQ campaigner and journalist has tried this approach too.

Wow, how dare they. Do they know all of his ancestors? Can they see into his soul?

And so what if he never identified as being black before, surely people transition in their own time and own way. Also maybe he was really into hip hop as a kid.

The thing is... In many ways ethnicity is a relatively fluid concept.

My DH is 75% black (carribean/West African mix) he is quite dark skinned however our son is very light. He's only a toddler so difficult to know how his skin tone will evolve but people won't consider him "black"

I'm not sure what his relationship will be with black identity. It's an enormous part of DHs life, not only with how day to day experiences but he runs a number of diversity projects at a very large company. But we don't know how our son will feel.

What I'm trying to say is there is no universal experience and someone who is very light skinned mixed race can choose to strongly identify with their black ancestry or not. We accept this when it comes to ethnicity but there is zero doubt in anyone's mind that you can not change ethnic groups. Yet we have the belief that gender is so fluid. I don't understand why this is.

A bit long winded but hope there's some coherent thoughts there!

I dont really think its that different. But all this trans race and trans age stuff just shows the absurdity of it all ajd how bloody offensive it is to pretend someone else's oppression belongs to you based on sterotupes of hair clothing make up music and a love of spicy food.

I.mean no one believes stefonknee wolsht is really six or the adopted father with whom they are in a sexual relationship with sould have been arrested.

They do however try and pretend its different somehow but end of day people are either who they say they are or their not? You cant say one thing is OK then when it shows how ridiculous the whole thing is say everything is not OK.

But men are also disabled/black/asian and everything else that has been attempted to identify into so people won't accept it.

Its only because no one gives shit about women that gensed is allowed to stand.

I have a friend whose mum is white Jewish, her dad was a Pakistani. She is dark skinned with black curly hair. Her ex husband is white and their first child is white skinned with brown hair. But her grandad was Asian. How should she identify?
