I've just been to the local corner shop and they had a paper called the 'Midweek Sport' displayed on the bottom shelf (lots of children in and out if the shop all the time). The front page has a photo of two topless women posing together. Is this still allowed? I remember some hoopla from years ago but can't find anything more recent (only had a quick look to be fair).

Christ it's 2020 FFS!

This really pisses me off. Placemarking, obvs.

DaffodilThatch · 02/09/2020 10:50

It really fucking pisses me off too. I mean, I know there's loads of porn on the internet but my 4 year old DD doesn't see that. Also, I don't want to see it.

I hope you hid it at the back on the top shelf?!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 02/09/2020 11:38

Did you say anything @DaffodilThatch?

DaffodilThatch · 02/09/2020 11:39

No. The top of the shelf is probably more directly in the eyeline of a 5 year old. I wonder if I haven't noticed this for a while because some of the bigger supermarkets/ chains don't sell those rags. I don't know, will look next time I'm out. It seems there was a campaign on this years ago. Can't find much post 2013.

The Daily Star also had a headline about sexy celebs making members grow Envy (not envy!)

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs no, but I think I will get in touch with the manager (there was a female teenager on the tills). Just wondered if I'd missed something - I thought this kind of thing was somewhat passé. Guess not.

There was a campaign about it. I don’t think it actually made law

DaffodilThatch · 02/09/2020 13:30

Yes @Nomnomarrgh I just found a House of Commons document that there are voluntary guidelines by newsagents trade associations. Seems to be mostly focussed on porn magazines and "lads's mags". In this shop 'newspapers' are outside, there is a section inside for magazines.

I'd definitely contact a manager about it, it's bloody ridiculous that shit like that is still being printed and displayed.

bookmum08 · 02/09/2020 14:10

I am amazed that's still being published. But tbh I would rather see some bare boobs (what child hasn't seen bare boobs?) than the awful covers of Take a Break etc magazine. You know the ones that have a picture of a sad child and titles like "No Daddy No. How my peado Dad sold me to his mates" or "Evil husband raped my daughter while I fed the baby" and all the awful things they put and are mostly displayed at children's eye height or even next to the tills. Urgh. Revolting.

maresedotes · 02/09/2020 14:17

I complained to my local Co-op about magazines like Take a Break being at eye level. Their headlines are awful. The local manager couldn't understand what my problem was so I complained to their head office.

I was told that magazines like Nuts, Loaded etc. had been told to put their magazines in 'modesty'bags. When they didn't they were removed from the shop.

Unfortunately, magazines like Take a Break were not included in this. This was from 2016 so maybe they've updated their policy?

You have my sympathy. They are grim aren't they?

DaffodilThatch · 02/09/2020 14:41

Thanks @maresedotes. This was a 'newspaper' rather than a magazine, the 2016 info seems to only apply to magazines. Apparently there is a difference between 'indecent' and 'obscene' but haven't had a proper look at that yet. The 'Take a Break' headlines etc do also sound really grim, haven't read one of those in many years (my granny used to buy it).

I don't necessarily have a problem with nudity I guess (both my girls are breastfed so have definitely seen my boobs a lot!), it's the sexualisation and objectification of women I don't like. And it's just casually on display outside the shop where you often see older kids/ teenagers congregate. Also feel sorry for the teenage girl who works there.

Lowest common denominator stuff is coming back. Instant solution is to turn the whole pile back to front. Repeat every visit.

nosswith · 02/09/2020 15:45

Please do not called the Midweek Sport a paper. You'll be calling the Daily Mail (the Paper that Supported the Blackshirts) something other than a tabloid next.

The back to front idea sounds good to me.

DaffodilThatch · 02/09/2020 15:54

@nosswith you're right, I agree hence the quotation marks. Very tired here, up half the night with baby!

Bridget Christie spoke in one of her shows about moving stuff like this around (possibly to the bin) in news displays.
