Response to my Liz Truss Email.

Finally got a reply off my MP to my Liz Truss email.

Am outraged.

Thank you for contacting me in relation to young transgender people. I am always keen to hear from constituents on matters of concern to them.

Labour is committed to trans people and supports updating the Gender Recognition Act and upholding the Equality Act. I am proud that Labour has a strong tradition of advancing LGBT rights. However, this is a complex issue in which there are often no simple answers to people's concerns. In this respect, the reported Government reforms of the Gender Recognition Act will be an opportunity for an important debate to occur on this issue and the issues that you raise too.

At the moment, we do not know what the Governments proposals are. However, I can assure you that the Opposition will scrutinise thoroughly any new Government proposals in relation to the GRA. Labour is absolutely committed to working with all sides of this debate. There is a great deal of nuance to this issue and it important that all opinions are considered carefully. We have a duty to ensure that all young people are provided with the tools they need to navigate a course through situations and events that are at best confusing or challenging, and at worst frightening.

Rest assured, you views have been heard. I will monitor this situation for any developments and bear your views in mind.

How many times does he mention transgender compared to the safeguarding of young girls and women??!!
“ situations and events that are at best confusing or challenging, and at worst frightening” like having a man with a penis trying on lingerie in the women’s changing room? Or waking up next to one in the women’s dorm at a youth hostel?

What is nuanced about not mentioning women or girls, or the numbers of women leaving labour because of this shit?

Indeed. The lack of awareness is utterly frightening.

I still don’t get the ‘nuances’ of:

  • a man showing his penis by the swimming pool - unacceptable - criminal
  • a man showing his penis 10 yards away in the female changing rooms alongside women and girls in a state of undress - fantastic - stunning and brave.

If only these lovely progressive Labour MPs could enlighten me as to why the tools GIRLS need to navigate a course through situations and events that are at best confusing or challenging, and at worst frightening are to be systematically removed.

We are surrounded by misogynistic idiots.

I would assume this is specifically in response to Liz Truss showing concern about the medical path under 18s are put on - I.e. the affirmation only route. My concern is that Labour are going to push for this to continue to be the only path for young people and that they consider anything else “conversion” therapy.

I've had a v similar response from my Labour MP (the first, after many emails on the subject) so I'm guessing they've been given a line.

Collidascope · 22/08/2020 08:12

I'm guessing, OP, that you were writing to say you support Liz Truss' proposals. That reply you've got very much sounds like a stock response that they've made for TRAs complaining about the proposals. Just a load of appeasing stuff about trans people. I suppose it's progress that they're now calling for debate though, and emphasising its importance. That certainly won't go down well with the "my existence isn't up for debate!!"" crew.

That was my thought (after I’d calmed down!), Collidascope
But then thinking that meant he hadn’t read my emails properly/at all, which pissed me off further.

I know he’s Labour, but I perhaps I expected him to be a little more aware as he’s married to Harriet Harman.

There is nothing nuanced about removing sex based rights and changing the meaning of a law. Its an unambiguous, radical assault on both human rights and the process by which rights and laws are codified.
It will have unforseen effects on other laws and human rights in the future.
