A surprising assertion was made by one of them that Fluoroxitine was used to suppress his urges. Does anyone know if this is true? I imagine it was for depression. The programmes presenter was very good and she made it clear that she really wanted the possibility of these men no longer offending, neither she nor we were in any doubt that they were very likely to. One in particular defined his feelings as a sexuality, and showed his meek exterior covered up a fierce anger and need to blame others. Also the therapist declared her aim was to get them to accept themselves. I would have thought that it might be better if they rejected themselves.

SSRI drugs, fluoxetine, setraline (prozac and the like) are infamous for causing sexual dysfunction. I didn't see the programme but I'm guessing Docs are gambling with this side effect being useful for offenders.

I saw it too, the bit where one of them got angry and wanted to see a balance between caring about child victims and caring about him was very revealing.

This type of AD is notorious for delaying/ preventing orgasm.

Loss of urge? Not so much I think.

Sex offenders enjoy control etc. Being less able to come might well make them worse. Frustrated and doing worse stuff to try and make it happen.

Didn't see the program

I agree with you. Even those who have chemical castration and no sexual urges still have the desire to control, cause pain and fear. I'm not saying it doesn't work for some but who would be prepared to take the risk with children.

I didn't see the programme either but I will scroll through Thursday night's TV to see if I can find it.

Nasty subject but interesting nonetheless; I can never understand why.

Yes I did think that if true, it would probably make them worse. I did wonder whether it was being prescribed for what he said it was, or was the idea some sort of placebo...ie if he believed it stopped arousal it would do so. These men convinced nobody I think

Just heard to programme discussed on Times Radio. Concentration on the manipulation and the fact that if this can't be 'cured' then what are the answers. Apparently the woman interviewing was very good and I believe she had been the victim of CSA so therefore very brave.

She was brilliant.

I believe she said she was abused by her own dad, and whilst she could never face him, she wanted to go ahead and do this programme still.

Very admirable woman. It must have taken a lot.

This is on another thread, hope it works. Might be of interest but don't have time to read it right now.

I think that every effort should still be made to develop treatment techniques as well as methods to objectively assess their efficacy, with a view to reintegrating offenders into society if effectively treated. Not for the good of the abusers but so that those who haven't offended feel comfortable to admit to their impulses and seek treatment before they offend. Otherwise, children are effectively being used to test whether a potential offender would sexually abuse a child.
