The uncancellable JK Rowling

Just been reading about the virtual Back to Hogwarts stuff planned for Sept 1st and it's made me think about the few bits I've read over the last couple of weeks.

In spite of the TRA / woke central demands that she be cancelled, there has been:

  1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has been re-released in China and is on course to break the 1billion dollar mark, making it one of a handful of films to do so.
  1. A new Studio Tour type park opening in Japan, with sets and props like the one in London.
  1. Digital Back to Hogwarts planned, with various cast members taking part, and donations being taken for Lumos, in an attempt to keep the normal crowds of fans from King's Cross station on September the first.
  1. H&M launched a Harry Potter clothing range, loads of it sold out in days (I know because I was trying to order things from it!).

Will be interesting to see the sales figures for the next Strike novel... But it doesn't seem like she's being hit hard in the pocket Grin. I'm delighted.

Had no idea the bbc had adapted the books, are the others on iplayer?

Yes. The first three are. The fourth is out end of this month I think. Books are better though - the TV shows leave out so much of the books - each book is covered in 2hra

Thanks 😊

Read an article supposedly originated in the Radio Times about the stars of the adaptation of the Strike novels, 'weighing in' on the 'JKRowling trans debate'.....rehashing the comments from two of the Faithless Three, but both of the stars had only positive things to say about JKR and (to my mind) sensibly declining to be drawn into a trans debate, (which these days I will take as a win). Seems the RT is trying to create a story of discord where none existed Hmm

I read the same article. Very sensible of the two Strike stars, saying they don't do social media and that the issue needs sensitive, nuanced debate (which alligns with JKs statement, actually).

Also saw a as on the TV earlier for Harry Potter medals from the royal mint! There's going to be lots of them & they're hideously expensive. Grin

I saw the cover in the supermarket, now I don't need to read it!

Pudmyboy · 26/08/2020 21:04

I agree with ItsAllGoingToBeFine: books are LOADs better than the adaptations! And money goes to JKR!

MissLawls · 27/08/2020 16:14

New Strike adaptation starts Sunday and continues Monday, 9pm BBC1. Four episodes. The book is, as is nearly always the case, much better. It has a female character who says she identifies as pansexual but is only ever seen with the same man. I thought then when I read it that JKR was taking the piss, albeit very mildly which seems to be her sense of humour.

All the Strike books are available as audiobooks read by Robert Glenister and he's in the new TV adaptation too!

iguanadonna · 27/08/2020 16:20

Yes, not only the same man but a traditional chauvinist pig! Definitely taking the piss.

Catiopea · 27/08/2020 16:23

I like to imagine, if JKR started a political party, that the annual conference would be serious, rational debate, in awesome outfits.

MissLawls · 27/08/2020 16:36

Yes I enjoyed that very much. I thought, "She knows you know. She knows." In all the debate, abuse and support slung JKR's way it's often forgotten that she's a really brilliant storyteller. She puts you right in the room, creates great, believable characters, tension, pace and plot. That's why she sells by the bucketload. In the end we hunger most for great stories and she delivers.

I think a lot of the hate is spite and envy. Which only harms the people who feel it. Those who are generous in their praise of a talent they'll never have but can appreciate probably enjoy much better mental health!

Oh yes!

Back to Hogwarts online event in lieu of the usual event at Kings Cross - just watched a video of Jason Isaacs promoting the event and he's wearing a Lumos t-shirt. Smile ♥️
