Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

TV interview/debate showing sexist bias

HelgaHufflepuff76 · 18/08/2020 14:55

My daughter is doing one of her A Levels in English language and has been asked to analyse a real life (not scripted) discussion or interview which shows, for example; gendered language, men speaking over women, women using submissive language etc.
Can any suggest anything? It would be helpful if it was available on YouTube.

Thanks

Does it matter how old the discussion is?

Senator Kamala Harris is repeatedly interrupted by her male colleagues; she was reprimanded, they were not.

No, I think it just has to have been televised or recorded

Mock the Week has loads of this sort of thing

I'm not a big Ash Sarkar fan but her Piers Morgan interview was a pretty classic example of a woman getting constantly talked over and demeaned:

Interesting to contrast with Piers' attitude toward the other panellist - a Trump supporting white bloke.

This is a brilliant compilation - 40 years of Hillary Clinton being asked sexist questions. Some real jaw-droppers in there (the Lady Macbeth stuff, for example.)

If your daughter wants to read a little around the topic then Caroline Criado Perez talks about men interrupting women in the very excellent Invisible Women (the 'Women's rights are human rights' chapter). It mentions Kamala Harris and gives links to related studies about how often men interrupt women.

The ones that spring to mind for me are

Parkinson interviewing Helen mirren (years ago)

And

More recent Matt Damon explaining racism and maybe sexism (can't remember) in films to a black woman after interrupting her to so

SerendipityJane · 18/08/2020 17:07

Only this year, Matt "I can't believe he's not the most useless in the cabinet" Hancock trying to intimidate Dr Rosena Allin-Khan by saying "Watch your tone" ?

The House of Commons is, sadly, a goldmine for this sort of thing.

There was a really well covered incident recently where a female MP spoke about violence against women and told she was talking hokum and there was lots of jeering. Can't remember who it was but maybe someone else can.

Was it Rosie Duffield MP’s speech in the House of Commons about domestic violence on International Women’s Day this year where she recounted her own experience of escaping a coercive controlling relationship?
thevassal · 18/08/2020 17:49

boatyard blues - don't think it was that one, I've watched that speech and the other MPs seem really supportive of her, I didn't hear any jeering. Even those on the opposition benches stood up when she finished.

Episode of taskmaster where the two blokes completely ignore the woman's suggestions so she carries on, completes the task by herself and leaves while they look confused. Even pointed out how ridiculous they were by the host of the show, and in the comments, which given the usual stand of youtube comments is noticeable!
Scout2016 · 18/08/2020 18:03

No it wasn't that. Hmmm.... going to bug me now.

Found it! Phew! www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-politics-49833804

Remember the 'calm down dear' by David Cameron to Angela Eagle.

Still infuriating.

Was it when one of the Yorkshire MPs mentioned standing under the Jo Cox's shield to deliver a message about the abuse female MPs face and then Boris Johnson stood up and said he'd never heard such a load of old ... whatever Borisism he used at that point.

That was a particularly outrageous example. I think it was some time before the election last year.

Scout2016 · 18/08/2020 19:44

@Icantreachthepretzels yes it was, I had found and posted it above...looks like some other female MPs echoed what was being said too and good old Boris called it all humbug. Ironically, they were talking about the importance of choice of language because inflammatory language being used in the Brexit debates and it was pouring oil on fires and putting MPs at greater risk. Saying we need to tone it down because this language is provocative and he said it was humbug Hmm

Emma Thompson being interviewed by Ben Elton is hilariously awful.

boatyardblues · 18/08/2020 22:13

Jonathan Ross interviewing Gwyneth Paltrow on his chat show (donkeys years ago) and being really inappropriate and lechy. He didn’t quite say “I’d do yer!” but that was the underlying vibe. The worst of it was that it wasn’t that long after her Dad died and he asked her some clumsy questions about losing her Dad, to the point she looked upset. Then the lechy comments about her appearance. She was so polite because who wants to trash their career by losing it in the public eye, but I was angry for her and would have cheered her on if she’d told him to fuck off.
