transgender: offered job then retracted because of questions about affirmation model

I was offered a job today with a large children's charity. During the call to offer me the job I asked about whether if this issue came up they were open to a diversity of opinions. The issue concerned was the affirmation model re transgender kids (ie they are affirmed as soon as they identify as the other gender).

Because I had concerns that other causes of gender dysphoria were not being explored - as expressed by many Tavistock whistleblowers and this may not be helping the child. I expressed my concern as a concern about children's wellbeing and the need to be child centred. I also asked about the still existing link and work with Mermaids on the website because of this affirmation model and because they had not withdrawn their advice on puberty blockers not being reversible. I said I felt it was important that as new evidence emerged it was important this was incorporated. The person on the call was supportive and said I would be allowed to express my opinion in an internal debate should one arise. I then received another call a few hours later from the same person telling me the job offer was being withdrawn because my values did not fit with their values of inclusion. I then asked whether if new evidence emerged that this approach was harming children whether they would change their practice. They said they would not. Note I had not accepted the offer yet as I was going to discuss working hours with my DP, but I was planning to accept it. I don't want the job anymore, but I am concerned at how I have been treated and more importantly the implications for safeguarding children - that a major children's charity would not change it's position whatever the evidence. Thoughts?

Many charities are mission or values led. If their employees hold different values they may detract them from that mission, regardless if you think that mission is incorrect. Do they count transgender issues as a significant part of their work? I think as you say you probably wouldn’t want to work there now as you don’t share their values. Your other point about children’s rights is separate I think - if they believe that their mission is correct there’s not a lot that can be done. I should think there are other organisations that share your values instead.

What was the actual roll you had applied for?
If it's one of the big children's charities, they are all stonewalled upto their eyeballs

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/08/2020 21:06

Role

inthenameoftherose · 14/08/2020 21:35

I don't think I can say what the role was. I am not sure they would count as a significant part

Does this charity directly counsel or work with children or does it mainly raise funds and then fund projects?

Shock that they would NOT change their stance should new information become available.

Porridgeoat · 17/10/2020 07:53

So a children’s charity which doesn’t hold children’s welfare centre

Angryresister · 11/12/2020 11:28

I wonder if anything has changed after last weeks judgement

Lumene · 11/12/2020 11:31

Wow. I would call ACAS and ask about legal advice.

Do you have anything in writing?

Beamur · 11/12/2020 11:35

The statement that they wouldn't change their approach even if there was evidence it was harmful beggars belief.
Can you say which charity this is OP?

Might be an idea to contact the director with concerns about their recruitment process and ability to safeguard. Explain that affirmation model rather then person centred nhs watch and wait model is what they should be using and it’s concerning they support fast tracking with life changing medication

OhHolyJesus · 18/04/2021 19:15

Might it be possible to lodge your concerns with the charities commission?

DisappearingGirl · 06/05/2021 17:11

It's no wonder all the people in some organisations think the same way, if anyone who thinks differently is hounded out or not employed in the first place.

Heleavesreviews · 15/05/2021 19:30

Is it lawful to turn someone down for a job because of their beliefs?

Thelnebriati · 18/05/2021 11:42

No, its discrimination; and not defensible if its a widely held ''belief'' that's based on generally accepted fact.

IDK how much help ACAS will be as they have also been captured.
