GCSE certificate replacement £45, free if you have gender reassignment

I have been trying to get a copy of my GCSE results and it seems all the boards charge. That is unless you want a replacement with your new gender and name and then its free.

I dont think that's fair. It should be free for all or the same price for all.

That's one to remember next time someone comes along to lecture us about 'cis privilege'!

If you get married and change your name, can you get a free certificate reissued?

Skyliner001 · 14/08/2020 14:28

What about a name change for another reason?

Jobseeker19 · 14/08/2020 14:33

I just checked and it also cost £45

What would be the legal position on this? Could this be a case of illegal discrimination on the basis of a protected characteristic?

Jobseeker19 · 14/08/2020 14:35

This is with Pearsons and Cambridge OCR boards. I havent checked the others.

Are all the protected characteristics symmetrical? So the sex one, both female and male are protected. Age is the young and the old.
But is it only those with the characteristic of gender reassignment that are protected under that heading?

Not the hill I would choose to die on.

Clearly this is because people undergoing gender reassignment may need to show their GCSE certificate to an employer, and would prefer not having their dead name on it. Allowing to do so for free is a nice gesture, and it doesn't deprive anyone in any way.
There is no equivalence to say, someone changing their name because they got married (no one feels dysphoria towards their "maiden name", surely? Having a certificate with that name is not particularly "outing")

I'm much more concerned about people using the gender reassignment loophole to hide past criminal history.

peachgreen · 14/08/2020 15:08

Oh give over. There's a difference between needing a new certificate because you lost it and needing a new certificate because you want it to reflect your gender and name accurately.

Facefullofcake · 14/08/2020 15:11

@Kaiserin - I never married, but I changed my surname by deed poll in my thirties. I hated my birth surname because I grew up in an extremely abusive family; it was a really unusual name and often drew questions about my family from other people, as well as reminding me about the absolute horrors in my DNA (lots of intergenerational abuse which got normalised).

Every time anyone's used it since I changed it, it's been really upsetting.
Not sure if that counts as dysphoria, mind Hmm.

TyroSaysMeow · 14/08/2020 15:17

So what's the difference between wanting a certificate that reflects you've changed your name from a masculine-coded one to a feminine-coded one, and wanting a certificate that reflects you've changed your name from a feminine-coded one to a different feminine-coded one?

SheepandCow · 14/08/2020 15:25

Seems unreasonable if other reasons for name changes are charged.

Some people have to change their names because their lives are at risk. People fleeing DV, for example.

It's not very fair to assume that if contact was made regarding this type of name change that they would refuse it. It would be impossible to say that it would be refused without specifically asking.

This.
wellbehavedwomen · 14/08/2020 16:58

This seems reasonable to me, I have to say.

OneEpisode · 14/08/2020 17:37

Do they ask for some evidence for the reissue or do people just pay (you said waived for trans people) and they just issue?
I was thinking of Nathan Hogg who stole that woman’s Durham University degree by inventing a transition story. In reality neither Nathan nor the real graduate were trans. It was in the papers last year.

highame · 14/08/2020 18:23

GRA should do it

OneEpisode · 14/08/2020 18:27

A Gender Recognition Act? Do you mean a Gender Recognition Certificate? £140 each, waived for those on a low income?
