Is the BBC institutionally transphobic?

I have no words (well I do but you know...)

No. Don't they have a very high proportion of trans employees?

KarenFitzkaren · 12/08/2020 16:53

Considering about 2 percent of the BBC are trans I would say no. I think that's around 440 people who are trans who work for BBC. Work force is about 22000. So more transpeople working there than represented in the general population.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 12/08/2020 16:55

Well obviously I don't think they are, but Jane the 'feminist' does...

Ha ha, its 'Jane' . Didn't clock that. Well of course Jane would say so. It suits janes extremely twisted narrative.

OneEpisode · 12/08/2020 17:03

The BBC probably is transphobic if 2+2 isn’t always 4.
Jane Fae has had genital surgery. I understand that is now transphobic too.
Apparently referring to “transitioning” is transphobic because that undermines non-op trans people who have always been their identity.

Jane includes this:
“ the utterly untrue assertion that the majority (c.90%) of trans women do not have surgery. This is based, to be charitable, on a misreading of evidence to a government committee in 2015. A less charitable view would be that it is outright lie.”
Jane doesn’t quote what % it is.
Anyone have sourcing for this?

NotTerfNorCis · 12/08/2020 17:06

a self-identified campaign

Everything self-identifies, in TRAland.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/08/2020 17:08

"The BBC has never been great friends to trans folk. Of late, the bias has intensified."
Thus proving that nothing short of total capitulation will do. And it has to be instant, no hesitation. They only disciplined Jenni Murray rather than burning the witch so of course they are transphobic.

Mumsnut · 12/08/2020 17:26

It may be true that the majority of trans people have surgery : mastectomies, Adam’s apple shaving, hairline adjustment, jawline softening ,etc

But does Any significant percentage have the sort of surgery that the layman tends to identify with the Transition process: ie, to primary sex characteristics ?

DianasLasso · 12/08/2020 17:31

Ah yes, the fragrant JF, knitter extraordinaire and defender of extreme violent pornography. Truly a beacon of modern feminist thought.

isabellerossignol · 12/08/2020 17:41

The comment about the BBC not being a friend to trans folk would be hilarious if it weren't so infuriating.

Since we have been working at home, my husband and I have both worked from our kitchen table and we always have Radio 4 on in the background. My husband commented the other day that he didn't think a single day had passed where there wasn't at least one news item or drama about the plight of trans people. And that they never question anything, no matter how ridiculous a comment an interviewee makes, they only offer support. And he's a man so hasn't got the finely tuned radar for this stuff that I do, since it doesn't affect him in the same way, yet even he noticed it.

A call to arms!

If you work at the BBC: take back your organisations. The anti-trans are a small but highly motivated clique. They get away with much, because many trans allies never get to see how much grief they are causing

Accusations are admissions?

howard97A · 12/08/2020 18:40

Fae seems to be worried that:

(1) the Mermaids and GIRES links have been removed from the BBC online platform;

(2) “there is evidence that the BBC is about to put in place a major review of editorial guidelines around language. Part of this will involve looking at language relating to sex and gender identity”;

(3) there is “an active network of staff members intervening to skew (sic) reporting of stories relating to trans people” and these women are “likely to be heavily involved in any upcoming review”

(4) “The review, like the removal of links to trans charities, was kicked off without consulting or involving trans organisations.”

All very encouraging!

Shedbuilder · 12/08/2020 18:51

No, the BBC isn't institutionally transphobic. 2% of its employees self-declare as transgender, which is around 4 times the number you might expect to find in the general population. It has broadcast a number of uncritical TV dramas and programmes and imported RuPaul and his drag race. It has a dedicated LGB and T+ correspondent, Ben Hunte, who regularly reports on Transgender issues — sometimes so enthusiastically that he makes claims that we have to nudge the BBC to correct.

Cabinfever10 · 12/08/2020 18:57

@howard97A
I agree

twitteriserasingus · 12/08/2020 18:58

The BBC recently encouraged all its staff to add their preferred pronouns to their email signature....not the actions of a transphobic organisation.

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/08/2020 19:19

Misinformation presented as fact is inserted everywhere and goes unchallenged.

The first item here for example (need to listen for a few minutes)

DrDetriment · 12/08/2020 19:21

If the BBC is transphobic then pigs are flying.

bathsh3ba · 12/08/2020 22:07

My kids have commented they have seen more trans people on BBC TV shows than in real life and I agree with them so I think not!

Doyoumind · 12/08/2020 22:15

I love the BBC but I agree that hardly a day goes by where there isn't a trans news story somewhere on the BBC. It's absolutely firmly in the TWAW camp and promotes trans rights above debate.

I regularly see people suggesting The Guardian is also transphobic.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if in the near future Penis News were added to the list of 'transphobic' media outlets.

FloralBunting · 12/08/2020 23:14

TL;DR - Fae is having kittens watching all that painstaking manipulation circling the drain, as sensible people wake up to the appalling damage the TRAs have done to young people, women and many under the trans umbrella too. The only possible response is a big, stampy narc tantrum.

Achhhhh - the black transwoman who threw the first brick - again Angry The Listening Project needs to go in the bin too.

FloralBunting · 12/08/2020 23:40

Oh yes, the black TW who threw the first brick, the TW who started the lesbian and gay rights movement, the TW who nursed gay men who had HIV/AIDS the TW who landed on the moon etc.

The homophobic revisionism never ends...

phew ! I was wondering if I was being paranoid about it... but it seems to infultrate even Radio 3 on occasion...
