little question about pink tax

27 replies

skql · 11/08/2020 16:16

macaroon price is very expensive relatively.(i don't know uk price, i'm in east asia)
and major customer are women.

is this pink tax?

but if this is a matter of pink tax, all cookie price should be same, isn't it?
if men like chips, women like macaroon, so when erase pink tax or blue tax both should be same?

or just macaroon is considered good quality cookie, so bakers take some extra ordinary profit.

there's no reason women should eat macaroon, isn't it?

What?

skql · 11/08/2020 16:35

@ShiveringCoyote

i'm sorry i'm not good on english.

i heard 'the reason for expensive macaroon price is pink tax, because women is majority customer.'

and i can't understand this.

Macaroons are quite labour intensive aren't they, relatively? Which is probably a factor in pricing. In addition to any possible pink tax.

GrandmaMazur · 11/08/2020 16:41

The pink pound used to be used to describe the purchasing power of the gay community I believe - though I imagine the expression would be very much frowned upon today

picklemewalnuts · 11/08/2020 16:46

Interesting question, but I think macaroons are very different from other cookies.

I think you need to look at more directly comparable products to compare taxes.

Maybe, women's scarves versus men's ties.

skql · 11/08/2020 16:49

i feel i'm so lost.

cake, macaroon...these are expensive.
i'm oppressed.Sad

FlamingoAndJohn · 11/08/2020 16:52

‘Pink tax’ refers to the same product costing more when it is pink and therefore ‘for women’.
Take disposable razors as a prime example. The men’s basic razor will cost less that the women’s. Same products but the women’s product costs more.

picklemewalnuts · 11/08/2020 16:53

I don't fully understand you OP, I think you may have a different cultural reference that's making it hard.

In the U.K. (where I am) sweet foods are eaten by women and men. Men like cake, cookies etc.

Macaroons are a dainties food, so perhaps more likely to be eaten at post afternoon teas which may mean more likely to be women.

skql · 11/08/2020 16:54

@picklemewalnuts

actually macaroon are same tax rate i think.(10%)
and i can't understand pink 'tax' means at this point.

but macaroon became popular recently, people use this for instagram.
i think it's luxury goods.

picklemewalnuts · 11/08/2020 16:56

I've seen that Flamingo, but the scale discounts aren't as good on pink razors- they sell fewer so they don't get as cheap. Men's disposable razors are cheaper because more are sold. I believe.

skql · 11/08/2020 17:00

@FlamingoAndJohn
oh... thanks. i can understand now.

@picklemewalnuts
i'm live in rice culture and bread cookie price is expensive.
because bread is considered dissert. so lot of deco and cream and...

and guys like bread and cookie too..
but i eat macaroon once in my life and i don't liked it.
and everyone can eat macaroon...
my head is spinning...

It isn’t actually a tax though is it, just that manufacturers charge more for items marketing specifically at women. The government don’t get any more of it.

One example is a scientific calculator my children needed for school. It was about £8 for the black one and £12 for an identical but pink one. DS1 actually wanted the pink one but I couldn’t justify spending the extra £4 on it to make him happy Grin

tara66 · 11/08/2020 17:02

Is it a tax on sugar?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 11/08/2020 17:04

Macarons are made with almonds which are more expensive than wheat flour, and they’re also quite tricky to get right, taking a lot of skill, time and probably a few batches of rejects along the way, which might also account for their price.

Also the fad element of them - cupcakes can be £3-4 each from a posh bakery, even though they cost pennies to make, just because they are (or were for a few years) the in thing.

Similarly, one of my DCs favourite things - macaroni cheese - is super easy and reasonably cheap to make, but when you get it as a side from a nice burger/steak place it’s always like £5 for a tiny dish of it.

skql · 11/08/2020 17:07

@MarkRuffaloCrumble
Literally pink tax!Grin

@tara66
10% is vat and i think sugar as Raw material is not charged.

In which country? Certainly the UK doesn’t charge extra tax on products for women.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/08/2020 17:09

Forget the edibles.

The Pink Tax is the increased price of everyday items or services just because the manufacturer made them in pink - sometimes literally - or labelled them 'for women'

Razor blades
Shampoo
Haircuts
Dry cleaning

As you get older it continues. DMs walking cane, as in it isn't black, cost more than DFs black one.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/08/2020 17:10

Mark they do, you just haven't noticed!

C4tintherug · 11/08/2020 17:13

Macaroons are significantly more expensive to make that normal biscuits!

skql · 11/08/2020 17:14

@MarkRuffaloCrumble

yep, that's the reason macaroon is expensive. i agree.

in my country macaroni cheese is expensive too,Grin, 7-8dollar for without burger.
little demand little supply.

but oyster is super cheep. like 3-5dollar i think.

if i'm oppressed by something, definitely it's not by macaroon price.

skql · 11/08/2020 17:21

UK doesn’t charge extra tax on products for women.

my country too.

i was in hot debate about macaroon price because women more like it , and it's expensive, so that's pink tax ...or not.

anyway, thanks for answer.
i'm going bed with spinning head.

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 11/08/2020 17:22

Sorry OP, I totally missed you saying this :
"i heard 'the reason for expensive macaroon price is pink tax, because women is majority customer.'"

So, you don't necessarily agree it's a pink tax.

As a PP said, it could be seen as pink tax when highly fashionable, trendy items are highly priced, because it's more often women who buy that kind of product.

I struggle with that idea when the product is a frivolous luxury item- just don't buy it. I feel slightly differently about products women are expected to buy if they wish to look professional - things like make up and heeled shoes.

homemadecommunistrussia · 11/08/2020 17:28

It's confusing, especially if you are not from the UK, because the difference in the price of things aimed at the different sexes has been referred to in a jokey way as 'pink tax' but it is not a tax at all.
Macaroons are nasty, I like a gingerbread person.Grin

OneEpisode · 11/08/2020 17:32

These are macarons, a usually very expensive, hard to make French thing. www.iceland.co.uk/p/iceland-12-macarons-132g/65158.html

These are macarooons which are easy to make at home thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/macaroons
Macaroons use Ground almonds and egg whites which is a pricier combo than the usual wheat based biscuits we make in the UK. But this is an easy gluten free biscuit for children to make and isn’t usually expensive in cake places either.
It sounds like in the Ops country rice based foods are cheaper than wheat based ones too.

PumbaasCucumbas · 12/08/2020 07:51

I always think macarons look like they should taste better than they do... slightly disappointing.
