Good article in Spiked about an Indian feminist, Vaishnavi Sundar, who made a film about workplace sexual harassment of women but who was denied opportunities to discuss and promote because TRAs found tweets where she recognised biological reality

Wow, powerful stuff. It's interesting, and very disheartening, that the same shit is happening all over the world.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 11/08/2020 08:08

Those comments though! I really appreciate the free speech angle that Spiked takes, but boy is it hard to read what some people think.

The negative pontifications by blokes just reinforce the continued need for proper feminism - even in the West.

It's not surprising Sundar would be 'cancelled' - the TRAs must especially loathe women who destroy the silly lie of feminism being by and about white women.

Men reminding us of their attitudes is a small price to pay for such women being given an uncensored platform so good for Spiked.

The comments are disheartening. I also saw this earlier this morning and thought it might make people horrified but sadly lots of people just saw it as another opportunity to “own the liberals” and take it as their comeuppance

Yes, very true! She has also done a podcast with Meghan Murphy

The comments are indeed truly depressing!!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/08/2020 09:16

But she has a great turn of phrase carrying water for patriarchy.

... and then you read the clueless, fuckwitted male comments below!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

acatcalledjohn · 11/08/2020 09:23

The highlight being men have it harder because they work in mines etc.

It's the patriarchal version of "all lives matter".

Does anyone know if the whole trans thing is as crazy in India as here?

Are there loads of blue haired non binary students all chanting TWAW?

I thought the trans culture was a western thing, but maybe not.

I think Sundar’s cancellation was dished out by US-based TRAs and Lib Fems. Having said that, I’ve definitely noticed that there is a creative elite in India (artists, photographers and literary types) who are in thrall to queer theory. Of course, these people do not inhabit (quite literally) the same spaces as most of the Indian population, who well understand that the root of women’s oppression is their biology. And they are numerically and politically pretty insignificant. I’m pretty sure the TWAW dogma does not have traction in India. There is activism (quite rightly) in relation to the rights of Hijras, but I don’t think anyone is claiming that male Hijras should be recognised as women if they wear a sari.

An old professor of mine, decades ago, was surprised how much Western philosophy, including postmodernism, had taken such hold in Indian Universities when he felt they had their own rich and interesting cultural tradition.

The comments on Spiked are always awful. It’s a shame, because it should be one of the last remaining places that allows sensible discussion, but instead it’s always just dominated by the same small group of idiots.

Meh, let them have at it. The alternative is worse.

TheHeartbeat · 12/08/2020 00:43

This is why it’s important for JK Rowling to speak up. She literally is the one who’s business is entertainment that can’t be taken down.

SetYourselfOnFire · 12/08/2020 05:08

Conservative men aren't going to ride to women's rescue. Too many of them hate and resent us exactly like the TRAs. They could clean up electorally by coming out for women's rights--why aren't they? Boris is stalling. I keep expecting the American right wing to play up the crazy TRA angle more, but they don't.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/08/2020 12:52

Maybe they can recognise misogynistic homophobia in a different guise? Consider Iran...

Great piece of writing, thanks for sharing.

The comments though. Ugh.

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 13/08/2020 08:41

Vaishnavi, on the Filia.org website, discusses trans activism in India and why girls and young women may see transitioning as a way out. I look forward to her documentary Not My Cup Of T.

Wandawomble · 15/08/2020 01:23

The comments are stupid beyond belief.
“She hates men so she deserves it” basically.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 15/08/2020 01:38

"I am not ‘anti’ anything except the endless derivative forms of misogyny."

Very nicely said by Vaishnavi

WandaWomblesaurus73 · 09/01/2022 13:36

"How can so many liberal feminists call themselves ‘liberal’ and laud pornography, an industry in which women are brutalised (and often killed)? How can you encourage children to be ‘drag queens’ performing sexual acts for adults, in the name of gender ideology? I wish they wouldn’t call it a movement anymore. It is a cult that extols men, who are often not really ‘queer’ but who want to take advantage of ‘self-identifying’ as a woman in order to gain oppression points and external validation." What a brilliant interview with Vaishnavi Sundar. Absolute Shero.

I've just signed up to her mailing list - her articles are important to read. I hope he joins us here.

I hope SHE joins us here that was meant to say!

Oh the irony

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 09/01/2022 21:03

Vaishnavi, I am so sorry that women in India are under attack from white western transactivists. The irony is that these people pretend to oppose colonialism, while they are the modern coloniaalists.
